A giant in daytime

Soap fans see the names of the writers on the screen of their favorite shows or read them in print but know very little about the men and women working behind the scenes. One of those unsung heroes who bring the fans the episodes of daytime drama they enjoy is Ron Carvilati who has worked on three soap operas. He was born Ronald David Carlivati on November 25, 1968, and is an openly gay male. The American screenwriter.is known for his tenures as the Head Writer on the ABC daytime drama shows One Life to Live and General Hospital. He is currently the Head Writer for the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives and its spin-off series Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem on the Peacock streaming service. He has received four Nominations and won five Awards for all three network soaps. In 2002 and 2006 Carvilati was nominated for Daytime Emmy's for Best Writing, One Life to Live) In 2008 he won the award for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series, One Life to Live. His second win came in 2018 for Outstanding Writing in daytime. In 2003 and 2006 he was nominated for the Writers Guild of American Award for One Life to Live. In 2014 and 2015; he won for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series, General Hospital and his third win came in 2016 for the category Daytime Drama Writing

The journey

Carlivati began as a Writer's Assistant on One Life to Live from 1996 to 1998. He became a Script Writer from 1998 to 2001 and a Breakdown Writer from 2001 to 2007. In the February 27, 2007, edition of Soap Opera Digest, announced that Carlivati had been promoted to Co-Head Writer on One Life to Live alongside Dena Higley. Just four months later executive producer Frank Valentini announced on June 4, 2007, that Carlivati was being promoted to Head Writer. His first episode in this position aired on September 11, 2007. After One Life to Live was canceled and the transition to online failed it was announced on December 1, 2011, that Carlivati would be the Head Writer for General Hospital beginning January 9, 2012. Carlivati's first episode aired on February 21, 2012. Three years later ABC replaced Carlivati as Head Writer on July 24, 2015, with Jean Passanante and Shelly Altman. On January 23, 2017, it was announced that Carlivati would become the new Head Writer for Days of Our Lives and was replacing former co-head writers Ryan Quan and Dena Higley. Carlivati's first credit as Head Writer was on July 19, 2017

Additional facts

Carlivati is also the creator of Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem which premiered on Peacock on September 6, 2021. The five episodes aired daily through September 10, 2021. Several cast members said they loved that Peacock did not have the same restrictions as NBC and they were allowed to curse. In December Days of Our Lives: A Very Salem Christmas premiered but there was criticism, Some viewers said it was inappropriate for the male strippers and drag queens to be dancing suggestively to Christian Christmas carols that are sung in church. The second chapter of five episodes for Beyond Salem is scheduled to premiere on July 11, 2022. Ron Carlivati graduated from McQuaid Jesuit High School in 1986 and attended College of the Holy Cross for undergraduate studies. He enrolled in George Washington University for graduate school, earning a Juris Doctor degree.
