Aleister Crowley's Four Books of Magick Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

This is the masterpiece of occultist, magician and philosopher Aleister Crowley, introduced for the first time by one of the world's leading experts on Western esoteric traditions, Stephen Skinner.

"Do what thou wilt."

Written in the early twentieth century, the four books contained within this collection make up one of the most complete and groundbreaking works on the practice of magick ever written. They are considered to be the masterpiece of occultist, magician and philosopher Aleister Crowley and the core texts for the religion of Thelema. Their influence on alternative western thought and philosophy cannot be exaggerated.

Also known as Book Four, or Liber ABA, the four parts bring together many rituals, received texts, theorems and unequalled insights into the practice of magick, culminating in
The Book of the Law, the central, sacred text dictated to Crowley by a preternatural entity. Anyone interested in yoga, ceremonial magic, esoteric thought, invocation, divination and beyond, or those looking to delve into the fascinating, playful and illuminating writings of a unique man, will find inspiration.

For the first time, one of the world's leading experts on Western esoteric traditions and magic, Dr. Stephen Skinner, introduces the text, sharing his insights into Crowley's take on yoga, ceremonial magick and Thelema. His long involvement with magick, both as an academic and as a practitioner, enabled Dr. Skinner to highlight the differences between the psychological and the spirit-orientated approaches to magick, and to show how that dilemma shaped Crowley's practice and his founding of Thelema, enlightening the reader to many previously unknown connections.

Melhor coletânea do Crowley.

3.0 out of 5 stars Convoluted, riddled with inconsistencies.

What did I like:

Sometimes Crowley was humorous and wrote with good prose. The cover is beautiful.

I liked how Skinner ripped him apart at every inconsistency. If you were to take all of em, you could make a chapter unto its own.

What I didn't like:

Crowley's tendency for euphemistic language, purposeful obfuscation, delusions of grandeur and all around mountainous ego and self righteousness.

The book is a difficult ocean to wade through; a chore to read and stay interested in. It is peppered with self righteous dribbling especially at the end where one just wants to be done with this tough shoe leather. There is a gigantic section about Crowley's life for which I was damned to read to claim completion of this work.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful text spoiled by Editor's Comments
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 28, 2022
Magick [Book 4] by Crowley is a masterpiece and if there was only one book on the subject made available this would be my choice. However this edition is spoilt by the erroneous and self-important notes made by the editor who gives the impression he believes he knows more about the subject than the author of the book. His comments clearly show he does not.

You'll find the edition published in '98 by Red Wheel/Weiser available and listed in Amazon; it is by far the best version and the notes and comments therein are extensive, relevant and illuminating in a way those in this edition are not. It is more than twice as expensive but if you are serious about the subject this is the one to study.
