As you get later in summer, you do get lots of seaweed, which can be yucky to swim in. The bay where lessons are taught is awesome. It's shallow water so you have a safety net if you need it, and I felt really comfortable -- which is important for a beginner. I signed up for "board time" and got a lot more than I was expecting. Both times I was out on the water, the instructors (I've been out on the water with Mitchell and Steve) were right there to give me helpful tips. If you're a beginner, I would definitely check out NY Kite Center. It's only 50 minutes by train from Penn Station.
If you're thinking about buying equipment, Johnny has great prices. Seeing they had the closest taxi service to my location I called them, was greeted by a very animated dispatcher and was promptly chauffeured to my destination, jet blue airlines at JFK Airport for a 6am flight. My driver was very accommodating for me and I slept the whole way inbound. I will certainly choose this taxi service to get me everywhere I need to go on Long island from here on in! The service was amazing Mr.G the limo driver I had was very plight, arrived before his time, definitely kept me on time for my next location.
