Found this amazing country pub during our drive through Painswick . It is tucked away down country lanes but as we followed the signs it led to this absolutely charming place . We were looking for somewhere that offered tasty sandwiches for lunch and this...is exactly what we got . We settled on the ham and cheese sandwich with caramelised onions and it arrived on gorgeous crusty bread with chips and salad .We sat out in the delightful gardens on a beautiful sunny day taking in the local village atmosphere. The hosts are so friendly and attentive nothing was too much trouble . Will definitely be visiting again next time we are in Gloucester.More

Stumbled across this charming little pub by accident as we were looking for somewhere to turn around, saw a sign for it and assumed we could turn round in the car park. Tucked away in a tiny village is a family & dog friendly pub...with great food at a reasonable price. Highly recommend.More

We stopped at the Butchers Arms after a walk on Sheepscombe Common, having seen it described as one of the Cotswolds best pubs. Book ahead! It was quiet when we arrived but quickly filled up! It's in a beautiful setting and the building itself is...gorgeous and has been well looked after. The staff were all great, not letting the current restrictions stop the warmth of their personality come through, and portions were plentiful! We had the scampi and the fish and chips, and both were delicious. Our dog had the dog friendly ice cream, and wholeheartedly approved! Definitely a "go to" if you are in the area, just make sure you book beforehand and be aware that the road to it is not for the faint-hearted if you don't know the area!More

The outdoor space was covered by a marquee. We chose to sit inside as the thought of eating with smokers outside in this “outside space” didn’t appeal. We were seated inside opposite the door to this area, which was wedged open. We could still smell...the smoke, and needed to shut the door. This was the entrance door for those outside to use the toilet. Every time someone came in from outside to use the toilet, we had to keep getting up to push the door closed in order not to smell the smoke. We were then asked for drinks. The drinks menu was pretty confusing with the alcohol strength/ABV wasn’t clear the first time we looked at it. We ordered two pints of Perry’s Vintage with an ABV of 6.5%. When the waitress provided the other drink we ordered, she said that they were changing the barrel. After a further 10 minute wait, she produced two pints of cider, but we were told that it wasn’t Perry’s Vintage but Gert Lush. We asked whether it was the same ABV, and she said yes, and therefore accepted the pints based on this information. The waitress didn’t ask whether this was ok and didn’t provide the correct information before serving us the drinks. We had since discovered Gert Lush was in fact 4.9% (a big difference from the original choice of 6.5%) and we weren’t happy that we were just given the drinks without being given the choice. Upon ordering again we asked for Perry’s Puffin. The waitress did come back and say they were out of stock and offered Perry’s Barn Owl instead. We then checked the menu and it was acceptable and said yes as it was a similar ABV. This was the same waitress that served us before. This made us even more disappointed as she clearly knew what to do, but didn’t do it the first time round. If we were standing at the bar we could have easily and quickly made the decisions about the ABV and cider choices. We understand that the government rules can’t allow this, but waiting staff should clearly be aware of the drinks menu and what ABV and origins of the drinks come from, from cider, beer and wine, in order to answer the specific questions of customers. They do this for the food, but in this case, not for drinks. We ordered from the specials board and the food was excellent. We mentioned this to another staff member and asked him to pass on our thanks to the chef. However the outdoor and drinks issues marred the overall experience, and we will not be visiting again.More

We had our main evening meal here two nights running, and found the service and the food to be top quality. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and there was a wide choice of starters, main courses and desserts. Prices very reasonable.

What a lovely lunch!! We hadn’t booked so came on the ‘off chance’ but the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating!! They found us a table and were super welcoming. The Valentine’s menu was a real treat - I had the mussels and it came...with a small loaf and loads of chips - can’t complain for £13! The staff were attentive and chatty even though they were super busy - they wished everyone a happy Valentine’s Day and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. We’ll be back!More

We were out on a long walk in the Cotswolds and booked here for a lunchtime stop off - what a great decision! We had a table in the sun on a beautiful day with lovely views. The food was all totally delicious, clearly homemade,...very generous portion sizes and great value. I chose the burger which I could have gluten free. The GF bun was one of the nicest I've had and the burger itself was so tasty, and I'm not a huge burger fan. My boyfriend opted for whitebait but as he thought that might not be enough he got the 'piggy chips' as well. Ooops! Both of them were huge! But really yummy as well. Some great drinks choices too and efficient friendly service.More

We booked a table for a late Sunday dinner, We underestimated the length of time of our walk and the staff were so helpful in delaying our time slot and assuring us that provided we arrived before the kitchen closed, we would be served. We...managed it and enjoyed a superb roast dinner and an exceptionally generous shared camembert to start. All was served in an outside marquee in a highly covid secure mannerMore

What a fantastic evening meal we had at this pub, everything about this place is just perfect (well except the road to it) a little tight in places which my wife didn’t like much, but worth doing to get there. We booked a table late...in the day, arrived early evening, four of us and our dog. As soon as we stepped inside we were looked after by our host and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The food menu has plenty of choice without over doing it, the drinks menu is extensive with a good choice of real ales and beers. We all had great food, my wife had a taster of her dish before deciding (another great touch) and even our dog had his own dish of sausages. I had the best Pork Belly dish (from the specials menu) I’ve ever tasted, coming from Reading you won’t get a serving of this size and flavour anywhere close to it where I live. This is the perfect excuse to visit my daughter at University more often. I would just like to say a huge thank you to the owners for such good food and service and for making us feel so relaxed, especially with our dog in tow who was catered for just as well as us. If you’re in the area or not, either way it’s well worth a visit.More

Could not have asked for better! From the moment we walked into the pub we knew we’d made a great choice. Welcomed by the young man serving behind the bar, the service was friendly and efficient. The menu offers a good variety of choices and...the food was delicious (very very good)! The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the pub was spotlessly clean (with modern toilets), We have already booked to return very soon to try out more of the menu!!More

We visited on Christmas Day for lunch, it was our first experience of going away and having Christmas dinner out and we will certainly be doing it again. The communication between Mark and myself in the run up to Christmas was excellent. The menu had...a great variety of options to choose from, I struggled to decide between starters. Upon arrival, mark welcomed us in, the pub itself is everything we hoped for, a typical Cotswolds, traditional pub. The Christmas decor complimented the venue so well. We had a drink before starting our meal, we didn’t feel rushed which was great. My husband had the duck salad and I was presented with the other two starters-I thought it was a mistake but it was simply kindness from mark and his team as they knew I couldn’t decide! The cheese starter was simply delicious, and the smoked salmon with beetroot was so fresh. We both had turkey as a main, a fantastic portion size and wonderful veggies on the side. I must mention the bread sauce as it was divine - and mark told us the chef felt it so important to have as an accompaniment! We were both so full after devouring the main but ploughed through to dessert. The Christmas pudding was perfectly cooked with a delicious custard, my husband had the cheese which was a great selection. We were both delighted by the meal, and the fact we didn’t have to do any washing up. I cannot recommend mark and his team more, if every meal is like their Christmas Day, they deserve every star possible. We hope to come back again soon to try something else!More

The restaurant we had booked for my birthday (Fostons Ash) completely let us down so we called the Butchers Arms to see if they could fit us in at the last minute as it was just around the corner. I am so glad they did...and only wish that we had booked here in the first place. The service and food was outstanding, so much so that we booked Sunday lunch whilst we were there. Beautiful place, gorgeous surroundings, fantastic service and amazing food. If I could give 10 stars I could.More

This is a beautiful country pub serving amazing food. My husband had the steak pie and he tells me that it was the best steak pie he has ever had. The food was so good that we returned for traditional Sunday roast lunch which was...also fabulous. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The arrangements which were in place to ensure the facilities were COVID safe were excellent and could not be faulted. As tourist who is new to the area the drive to the pub along single track roads is not for the faint hearted!! We will certainly return if we visit the Cotswolds again.More
