The setting of "Little Fires Everywhere"

Fictionalized as the setting of the 2020 miniseries "Little Fires Everywhere" based on the novel by the same name written by Celeste NG, Shaker Heights is a city known for its older homes and its community pride. From lush parks and recreational spaces to a popular shopping and dining scene in the Van Aken District, there's a lot to do. It's also a train ride or a nine-mile drive from Cleveland. "It's more of a city feel, and people from Shaker they identify with being from Shaker it's very it's a very community type vibe," says Joel Gabelman, Real Estate Agent, Red One Realty, who has been selling homes for eight years.

Have a fun family day at Thornton Park

Shaker Heights has multiple parks and places for recreation within the city. Children can run around on the playground at Thornton Park, which also features a skatepark for skaters to perfect their tricks. During the summer there is a pool for warm days. Residents go for a walk on the trails at Horseshoe Lake Park. Boulevard Field hosts a ton of sports with its baseball and soccer fields. Ice skating is a popular activity in Shaker Heights. "During wintertime, the Shaker fire department will spray water on the public parks in Shaker and have little ice rinks for the city of Shaker residents," says Gabelman. Shaker Heights also has an 18-hole golf course at Shaker Heights Country Club, which opened in 1913. The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes is a place to take in nature while walking on its paths. There is a treehouse, a marsh overlook, a boardwalk, and a Nature Play Area.

Grab a bite to eat and go shopping at the Van Aken District

The Van Aken District is the pulse of shopping and dining in Shaker Heights, with more than 40 shops and eateries. From trendy boutiques like LADDER, offering luxury watches and bags, to gift shops like Luster, there are plenty of places to shop. Meanwhile, culinary delights abound, with an array of eateries catering to diverse palates. For a fun night out, locals can go to 1899 Golf and play nine holes of simulated mini golf and eat from a menu that includes steaks, burgers, wraps, and flatbreads. Cilantro Taqueria serves tacos, Mexican Street Corn or burritos, while NorthStar is known for its vegan smoothie bowls. Residents shop at Heinen's for groceries.

Honor those who served during the Memorial Day Parade

Each spring, the community in Shaker Heights celebrates those who fought for the country during its annual Memorial Day Parade, which stretches from City Hall to the Van Aken District The city's recreation department hosts signature events like Doggie Dip, where furry companions join in the fun for a refreshing dip in the pool. The Van Aken District hosts special pop-up events like children's story time, yoga and live music. The community also comes together to celebrate with block parties. "My block has a Pizza Friday every Friday during the summer," says Karen Nordstrom, a Realtor with Howard Hanna who has lived in the city for more than 20 years.

Most homes built in the early to mid-1900s

There are nine neighborhoods in Shaker Heights, and most of the homes were built in the early and mid-1900s. Fixer-upper ranch-style homes can be priced starting at $31,500, ideal for DIY enthusiasts or investors. Colonial-style can begin at $42,500 but can reach almost $3,0000 tucked away on spacious lots, complete with in-ground pools and convenient access to the RTA train stations. There are a lot of condominiums in the city, with prices starting at approximately $60,000. Multi-family homes are also abundant in Shaker Heights, with prices beginning at $74,900 for units featuring two bedrooms and one bathroom, which is ideal for families or investors seeking rental income. Tudor homes with four bedrooms can be priced at $275,000, while expansive six-bedroom Tudors with large front yards are priced at $375,000. The median price of homes is $315,000

Hop on the RTA train towards Cleveland

Shaker Heights residents can hop on the Cleveland RTA subway train for access to downtown Cleveland, which is also a nine-mile drive away. Whether they're jetting off for vacation or business, locals can hop on Interstate 480 towards Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, located approximately 20 miles away. The neighborhood is also situated near Highway 71.

Get a head start on job training with the Career Technical Education program

Students can attend Fernway Elementary School for kindergarten through fourth grade, which has an A Niche rating, before going to Woodbury Elementary School, which teaches grades four through grade six and has a B+ rating. Children can then go to Shaker Heights Middle School, which has a B rating. Then, students can attend Shaker Heights High School, which has an A rating. Here, students have access to a diverse range of academic programs, including the Career Technical Education programs, which teach fields such as healthcare, information technology, engineering, hospitality, and business management.
