Using Video and Audio Diaries to Better Understand Study Participant Experiences: A Pilot Study in Feasibility and Acceptability May 3, 2024

Using a small sample of 18 patients from a larger pilot randomized control trial, the authors explore how video and audio diaries collected during the intervention may help in better understanding patient experiences with randomized control trial interventions. Overall, participants found it easy to record their video or audio diaries, although participants’ comfort and perceived value of doing so declined over time.

This report describes an evaluation of the California Multi-County Full Service Partnership Innovation Project. Qualitative interviews and quantitative analysis of electronic health records and program data were used to describe program implementation and outcomes among the first cohort of six participating counties. Overall, there is evidence that the project led to improvements in processes and outcomes among the first cohort.

Since the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline—the national mental health emergency hotline—launched in 2022, an area of focus has been 988/911 interoperability: the existence of formal protocols and procedures that allow the transfer of calls from 988 to 911 and vice versa. This report presents case studies from three jurisdictions that have established models of 988/911 interoperability, including lessons learned from planning and implementation.

RAND Corporation and MedStar researchers examined the intersection of patient safety and racism, focusing on patient safety and health equity from clinician leaders' perspectives. An overarching emphasis of the work concerned the impact of racism and other related factors (i.e., bias) on patient safety events and potential interventions or changes (such as creating a culture of speaking up about racism in care) that can help prevent such events.

To obtain a national picture of districts' challenges at the end of the third school year during the COVID-19 pandemic, the authors assess nationally representative survey responses from 291 district leaders who completed the American School District Panel in spring 2022. Survey findings reveal that districts continue to struggle with how to address teacher shortages, political polarization, student and staff mental health, and student learning loss.

To examine superintendents' job satisfaction and short-term career plans, RAND researchers fielded a survey to a randomly sampled set of 291 American School District Panel district and charter leaders — including 222 superintendents — and then weighted their responses to be nationally representative. Analyses suggest that, as of spring 2022, superintendents have positive feelings about their jobs and intend to leave their positions at rates on par with prepandemic levels.

This group is a key county demographic with attitudes toward mental illness that sometimes differ from those of other ethnic groups.
