Praeterita: The Autobiography of John Ruskin (Oxford Letters & Memoirs) Paperback – January 1, 1978

Praeterita is one of the most remarkable autobiographies of the 19th century. Written by Ruskin in the 1880s between attacks of brain fever, it gives a fascinating account of his upbringing in a severely respectable Victorian household, his Continental travels, his friends and relations, and the development and refinement of his aesthetic tastes.

This is an older edition of a book that is on few people's lists. It was important to many in the 19th century including Proust who translated the whole thing. It is too bad that Ruskin has fallen off the historical map for most when he was so influential during his life.

This is probably the one book by Ruskin that should be read in its entirety.

His other works are better experienced in anthologized excerpts, unless you writing a thesis about him.

I love his early style, but it's so ornate that reading it at length is like eating an entire chocolate cake for lunch. PRAETERITA is stylistically less overwhelming.

Some day, perhaps, this great writer and sad but wonderful human being will be rediscovered. See if you agree
