"I was reborn with my perfection stolen from me. To get it back, I'll rip this rotted world apart. Angels are beautiful. Angels are beautiful."
Alice Angel explains her goals,
Bendy and the Dark Revival: Chapter 5

Alice Angel is the animated monster form of Susie Campbell, one of the Alice Angel caricatures in the Cycle, and the secondary antagonist of the Bendy series.

She appears in Bendy and the Ink Machine as the main antagonist of Chapter 3: Rise and Fall and Chapter 4: Colossal Wonders, and as the hidden main antagonist in Boris and the Dark Survival. She also returns as a supporting antagonist and boss character for the final chapter of Bendy and the Dark Revival.

Overview[]

Physical Appearance[]

Alice Angel appears to be a young woman and a humanoid replica of Alice Angel with straight, medium-length black hair, thin eyebrows, and black lipstick. She wears a semi-broken angel halo that melted into the left side of her head, as well as a pair of short, realistic-looking horns. She wears a black flapper dress in 1920s style with a white bow tie resembling Bendy's. Her entire arms are coated with an ink-black color to resemble sleeve-like gloves, but she does not wear white gloves like her original counterpart, Alice Angel. Unlike the original Alice, she wears a pair of black tights on her legs and black Mary Jane shoes. She also has a sepia bow on the back of her dress that has straps, which the original Alice Angel does not appear to have.

The iris color of her right eye is the same yellow as her eyeball, and she has a beauty spot on the right side of her face along with a small mole. The left side of her face resembles melted wax, with half of her teeth exposed and an empty left eye socket with a few ink-like tears. On her neck, there appeared to be a slit oozing with one drip of blood-like ink.

Personality[]

Alice Angel is first shown to be somewhat friendly and manipulative. This is revealed when she makes Henry Stein do all of her bidding in exchange for letting him use the lift to escape the studio. She was sadistic, demanding Henry kill the ink-dwelling creatures and also threatening to kill him should he anger her. When it seemed, she was going to let Henry go free, she dropped her façade and revealed herself as a very demanding, childish, and persistent monster, although she expresses this side when ordering Henry to slaughter the Butcher Gang's enemies. She also had a semi-bookish, poetic speech pattern.

Alice Angel was incredibly vain, egotistical and obsessed with her beauty and perfection, and would've done anything to maintain it. This is seen in the numerous dead clones of Boris, Piper, Fisher, and Striker she had harvested,[1] as well as her constant fear of the other ink monsters, as she fears that they will drag her back into the "dark puddles".

She was shown to have a seething hatred for the Ink Demon, as well as some form of rivalry towards the Ink Demon, as she would not let him touch her again after she had turned from a shapeless blob to a nearly human-shaped figure.[2] Her refusal to allow the Ink Demon to touch her seems to have resulted in her developing Haphephobia (fear of touching or being touched), as evident by her violent reaction to Audrey Drew trying to use her Banish ability on her. Additionally, she also warns Henry to hide from The Ink Demon whenever he appears close by.

Alice Angel's voice seems evil and changes constantly. At all times, she will have an additional voice in case her own voice sounds low in pitch. Sometimes and briefly, her voice can change, closely resembling the original Alice Angel's own voice.

History[]

Boris and the Dark Survival[]

Alice has her first in-game appearance after being added in The Wolf Trials update under the name '' Milla Legna'' a distraught woman from Eastern Europe, who somehow found herself trapped within the walls of Joey Drew Studios. Throughout the game, Buddy Boris can find her tapes in various corpses of failed clones of Boris the Wolf. After Buddy Boris collects all the recordings of Milla he should find the key to open the door leading to the room Milla was trapped in.

Boris finally meeting Milla.

Once collecting all of Milla's tapes and her key, Buddy Boris can enter a door, revealing her to be a pseudonym made up by Alice to lure Buddy Boris to his doom. An ending cutscene now plays, and Alice is now hunting for Buddy Boris. This is meant to emphasize that Buddy Boris managed to escape her wrath, as indicated by the ending. After the ending, the player is suddenly greeted by another level, which, unlike the other levels, is of indeterminate location and has a fixed layout. Alice Angel's presence in the area itself is indicated by her sinister cackling. After completing the level, Alice Angel will occasionally appear in the standard randomly generated levels.

Unlike the other monsters that hunt Buddy Boris, Alice Angel simply meanders, as opposed to running, unless provoked. When visible, a white halo is visible around her feet, similar to the Ink Demon's shadowy masses. Her equivalent of the ominous heartbeat noises that emanate from the Ink Demon's shadowy masses is her humming of Lonely Angel. If she finds Buddy Boris within her line of sight, she will yell out a loud, defiant screech and charge after him, flailing her arms about as she does so. If Buddy Boris hides in a Little Miracle Station and Alice Angel is visibly close, it is possible to see her stamp on the ground with her foot childishly, emphasizing that she is frustrated. Every time Buddy Boris hides from Alice Angel, she will mutter to herself, either gloating that he will eventually come out of hiding or, in the case of some other quotes, venting her frustration.

Bendy and the Ink Machine[]

Chapter 3: Rise and Fall[]

Alice Angel suddenly appearing in the recording booth, in Chapter 3: Rise and Fall.

Alice Angel's humming is first heard briefly from the Heavenly Toys room during Henry's first visit, which occurs after the "Former Glory" music ends.

In Alice's toy room, she makes her first appearance, where she suddenly appears inside the center booth room while the "I'm Alice Angel" song is about to end, screaming "I'M ALICE ANGEL!" in a fit of frustration while banging on the window and then breaking it before disappearing. Just before the lights go back on, Alice Angel's voice is heard, saying that she is aware of Henry's arrival and beckoning him to come along further.

Alice Angel's voice is once again heard when Henry enters the elevator on Level K with Buddy Boris, talking through a speaker. She considers Henry to be so "interesting" and "different" and then demands he visit Level 9.

In the flooded area of Alice Angel's lair, Henry and Buddy Boris encounter deceased clones of Boris, Piper, Fisher, and Striker. Alice Angel, using the speaker, says their deaths were necessary to make her beautiful and that anything that wasn't perfect was left behind.

Alice Angel torturing Piper for trying to kill her.

From the last room at the end of Level 9 Henry enters, she is seen using the machine pad to torture Piper. After noticing Henry's arrival, she ends with torturing Piper and contemplates killing Henry. She tells Henry about what it would be like living in the "dark puddles", describing it as a "buzzing, screaming well of voices". Then she talks about her creation where she first started out as a "wriggling, pushing, shapeless slug" created from the overflow of ink. She says that she was born again, but this time it "made her an angel" and that she wouldn't let The Demon touch her again as she is so close to her perfect form. Eventually, she determines Henry to be of use, and promises to send him back up, but only if he completes certain tasks. Afterward, she closes the entire window with two gates and continues to torture Piper, possibly killing him.

Alice Angel's tasks include collecting special gears on Level K, collecting extra-thick ink from the Swollen Searchers on Level 11, collecting valve cores on Level P, destroying Bendy cutouts (for the purpose of angering The Ink Demon), defending her room from the Butcher Gang, and collecting hearts from Level 14. While Henry is embarking on these tasks, Alice Angel will speak of The Ink Demon and advise Henry on hiding.

Alice Angel about to abduct Buddy Boris, in Chapter 3: Rise and Fall.

Once all of her tasks are completed, Alice Angel will allow Henry to go back onto the elevator with Buddy Boris, but as they are ascending, she begins to laugh maniacally. She will then plunge the elevator toward Level S, reveal her true knowledge of Henry's intentions, and accuse him of stealing from her. Alice Angel then demands that he gives Buddy Boris to her or else she would take him for herself after killing Henry, as Buddy Boris' insides are needed for her to be beautiful again.

After the elevator crashes, Alice Angel, who is heard humming, will sneak up on Buddy Boris, who is tending to Henry. Soon after when everything goes dark, she seems to disappear once she is close enough to get behind Buddy Boris, along with kidnapping him by force, leaving Henry unconscious in the wreckage.

Chapter 4: Colossal Wonders[]

Alice Angel's death, in Chapter 4: Colossal Wonders.

Alice Angel reveals to have transformed Buddy Boris into a hulking beast known as Brute Boris. At the end of the fight, she loses her cool after Henry finished Brute Boris off. Infuriated, she lunges at Henry. Although she is stopped in her tracks when Allison Angel impales Alice Angel with a sword, killing her.

Bendy and the Dark Revival[]

Chapter 4: Factory of Horrors[]

If the player opens the gate cover for subject 928, the message "Are you worthy to walk with angels?" is written on the floor directed at the player, assuming Alice escaped from the Cyclebreaker prison.

Chapter 5: The Dark Revival[]

When Audrey drinks the Sleeping Draft in her hotel room, Alice Angel appears and kidnaps Audrey. She decides to play a game of riddles. If Audrey can solve the riddle correctly, the hostages get electrocuted. But if Audrey fails, then she gets electrocuted.

After Audrey solves the puzzle, she goes into the next room, where Alice Angel is waiting with the Tommy Gun. Audrey must navigate the area by opening Gent Locks, pulling switches, and letting Alice break two lifts that allow Audrey to flow her way around. Alice will not notice Audrey when crouching during this scene. By opening a security door, Audrey sneaks behind her, and tries to banish her. Alice Angel gets mad, Audrey smacks her, and they both fall. But just before Alice Angel can murder Audrey, Allison Angel arrives with Tom and kills Alice Angel by once again stabbing her in the back. Before she dies, Alice Angel finally sees the face of the woman who replaced her, and dies content, finally feeling she has achieved perfection and became beautiful.

Bendy: Secrets of the Machine[]

Alice makes a very minor appearance in the game. When the player breaks a certain amount of cutouts, Alice will say "He hates it when I do that." This line is reused from Bendy and the Ink Machine, when Henry finishes the cutout task.

Trivia[]

  • Alice Angel's concept art (left).
Alice Angel was first developed by the team when making the third chapter for Bendy and the Ink Machine. Her original concept art wears an apron with a stained ink splat. It was displayed in Bendy and the Ink Machine's archives chapter.
  • The song Alice Angel usually hums is the first part of the track Lonely Angel / I'll Be Your Angel.
  • Alice's disfigured face has a resemblance to the DC comics villain Two-Face, in that both have a face that is intact on one side but horribly disfigured on the other side.
  • In Bendy and the Ink Machine, Alice Angel might have an uncanny ability to see everything that is happening around the studio, without any cameras or sensors. The events that it was confirmed that she knew include:
    • Whenever Henry completes his tasks.
    • The Butcher Gang attempting to invade Level 9.
    • The Projectionist wandering through the Ink Abyss.
    • Knowing that Boris is with Henry.
    • Henry ascending up the stairwell the Ink Machine was briefly seen in.
    • Henry playing the "test your strength" game.
    • Henry entering the Haunted House.
  • However, she isn't always aware of where that same Boris hides when she chases after him nor shows that she uses a speaker to get a connection with Henry and if she possesses this ability she wouldn't be surprised by Allison's attack.
  • In both games, Alice meets her demise at the hands of Allison, although she was able to get a glimpse of her before dying in the second game.
  • In Bendy and the Ink Machine: Chapter 3, a part of Alice's dialogue from the elevator is almost exactly that of Joey's letter about Susie's replacement as Alice.[3][4]
  • In Bendy and the Ink Machine: Chapter 3, Alice Angel's laughter was heard after her jumpscare in Alice's room, her jumpscare actually does end up laughing once she shatters the booth window. Although this last part of her animation is not completely visible due to the room's thick darkness that suddenly occurs. It still can be clearly seen only when using the animation program engine.
  • On Twitter, Mike Mood shared a link to the SoundCloud audio of the "original" version for one of Alice Angel's dialogue where she brings Henry and Buddy Boris to Level 9, tested by Mike himself.[5]
  • Alice Angel is heard asking "Did you lose something?" from the beginning of the Bendy and the Ink Machine: Chapter 4 reveal trailer.
  • In Bendy and the Ink Machine: Chapter 4, her death animation file is called Anim_Alice_Z_Final. Files starting with Anim_AliceA_ are the animation files of Allison. The meaning of the Z in Alice's death file name is unknown. Every other animation file for Alice starts with a CH3_alice_.
  • In Bendy and the Ink Machine: Chapter 5, Alice Angel's voice can be heard twice in the Lonely Angel/I'll be your Angel song played on the radio, specifically:
    • "I'd not be by myself..."
    • "And fly straight into your heart..." (the second time)
  • A few doodles of Alice Angel seen in the various storyboard sketches.
At the Bendy and the Ink Machine epilogue, drawings of Alice Angel can be seen in Joey's sketches found in his apartment. Alice Angel's sketch scenes include her fighting off the ink creatures with the aid of Allison Angel, her transforming into an unrevealed demonic form, her "cartoony" version preparing to operate the already-deceased smiling Boris's corpse, sitting on The Ink Demon's throne, and riding in the cart of the Haunted House with Buddy Boris or Tom.
  • In Boris and the Dark Survival, her walking animation was taken directly from the tail end of Bendy and the Ink Machine: Chapter 3, while her chase animation was also taken directly from the ending of Bendy and the Ink Machine: Chapter 4. She does have a new original animation when she sees Boris in-front of her.
  • One of her voice lines in Boris and the Dark Survival is an ironic reference to the Brothers Grimm fairy tale The Three Little Pigs.
  • In Boris and the Dark Survival, Alice uses the alias Milla Legna, which if you spell the last name of backwards, you will get Angel, foreshadowing the reveal she was Milla.
    • If you rearrange the letters of said alias, you can get the phrase "I am Angel."
  • The idea of Alice Angel using a pseudonym in Boris and the Dark Survival appears to have been inspired by the character of Frank Fontaine, from the 2007 video game BioShock, in that both use seemingly friendly pseudonyms with foreign accents but are in fact proverbial deceitful on the inside.
    • Adding credit to this, a reference to Frank Fontaine is also made in Bendy and the Ink Machine: Chapter 5, on the appointment board in the Administration Lobby.
    • It is unknown if she was lying or not about her father's butcher shop. She, as Milla, mentions bodies twisted and pulled apart. It is unknown if this means that her urge to take apart Boris Clones is something she inherited from her father.
    • On Twitter, Lauren Synger said that the inspiration for Milla's Russian accent came from Brigid Tenenbaum, a character also from Bioshock.[6]
  • TheMeatly finds Alice's dialogue the most fun to write, and as a result, Alice is one of his favorite characters.[7]
  • Scrapped dialogue for Chapter 3 can be found in Google's Public Media archives and seems to be the original line that Alice would say after jumpscaring the player in Alice's Toy Room. The following dialogue can be found here: https://storage.googleapis.com/vocodes-public/media/9/6/k/8/n/96k8ndsh3prmggsevqecd0cwz8zsv1pd/fakeyou_rvc_96k8ndsh3prmggsevqecd0cwz8zsv1pd.wav

  7. "In terms of story, I have to say that Alice Angel is a blast to write for. For those unaware, Alice Angel is a monster version of a sweet animated character of the same name. A twisted blend of innocent cartoon and mutilated human. She has a strong duality as she wrestles with both sides of herself making her a fun character to write for. While some characters are also unique to write, like Sammy Lawrence (a crazed cult-leading music composer) and Wilson (the main antagonist of Bendy and the Dark Revival), they still have some level of relatability to them. You can guess what they are going to do to some degree. With Alice Angel she is completely insane, evil, demented, and yet somehow very human. Our fans find her wildly entertaining and scary." -theMeatly, [1]
