Interesting scenario. Why did Pomerania remain a Duchy? I’d think it would at least declare itself a kingdom upon independence with the titles inflation of the 19th century

What’s the titles inflation?

Everywhere became an empire or kingdom. This is exemplified with little old Luxembourg which is a grand duchy. Which in the Middle Ages being a grand duchy was a big deal and meant you held a large chunk of land in Europe.

Excellent. It’s a great looking map.

So Pomerania survives both the Thirty Years War and the Napoleonic era? Does the House of Griffin still rule? Are the two maps indicative of two language communities? What is the status of the Low German dialect(s)?

So in this timeline Pomerania survives Thirty Years War and Napoleonic era thanks to neutralism of this country. Pomerania took part in Congress of Vienna. From this event Pomerania was balancing bettwen two main spheres of influence: Polish and 'German'. Duchy stayed mostly neutral throught most of the World War 1 but in the inter war period, because of growing facism in german states the Polish-Pomeranian realtions grew stronger (Pomerania was a member of the unfortunately fallen Interamarium), so hence the polish language was used together with german. In Pomerania besides two main official languages:Polish and German there are also few dialects such Low German near Anklam, Polabian near Stralsund, Kashubian near Łeba and Swedish in the very north part of Rügen Island. The House of Griffin is still the ruliing house in the country. In this scenario the Duches of Słupsk Anna de Croÿ took the trone after her father Bogislav XIII passed away.

What about II WW and Cold War?

Second World War started on 1st of september 1939 when german ground divisions crossed the german-pomeranian border and marine divisions landing in Stralsund and Szczecin. Royal family was forced to escape west. On 9th september german military surrounded city of Colber/Kołobrzeg. The Duke and his family had to escape from the country by boat to Sweden. After Pomeranian was integrated into III Reich the same way Austria was, geramn troops entered Poland. Here almost everything happend the same way as in our normal history. Soviet forces entered Pomerania from the east and south east on March 1945. After taking over Sczeczin soviet forces installed socialist government. Duchy of Pomerania changed its name to Peoples Republic of Pomerania. After war Pomerania was heavily industrilezd. In cities alongside coast and Szczecin lagoon ports have been modernized and enlarged. Many new shipyards have been established.Pomerania was a member of Warsaw Pact so Pomeranian troops were sent to Prague when the Prague Spring occured. In June 1989 following the example of Poland and Polish Round Table Agreement in Szczecin a meeting was held beetwen comunist government and opossiton made of demcocrats and royalist. In late november after fall of the Berlin Wall massive protest occured throughtout whole country. On 2 December His royal highness The Duke of Szczecin(son of The Duke of Anklam which was a head of state at the start of the war),and his wife Her royal highness The Duchess of Kołobrzeg came back from exile. On 3rd december the new pomeranian democratic goverment was appointed by The Duke. The constitutional monarchy was chosen as a new rulling system but returning with the old name: The Duchy of Pomerania. In 1999 alongside Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic Pomerania joined NATO and in 2005 joined EU.

Great map, and for a person who lives here, it warms a heart :)

Looking forward to seeing more!

What was it up to during WW2 and the Cold War?

u/Pimpmykaiserreich avatar

What would be the national language? Pomeranian East Low German with the Stettin one being the standard version? Kashubian and Polish being recognized minority languages?

u/TheTexanHusky avatar

It seems to be Polish, as the map suggests.

Personally though, it should be Kashubian, since that's the closet relative to the ancient Pomeranian language.
