Niclas Castello born on July 21, 1978 in East Germany, is a contemporary artist. Castello’s life was early influenced by the fall of the Berlin Wall what turned his attention to the impressive world of Pop Art as well as the Neo-Expressionism of
Jean-Michel Basquiat, which influenced his paintings and sculptures. The artistic work of Castello is dominated by the tension between the occupation with the sculpture and the expression through painting. Through this year-long conflict, Castello was able to create his groundbreaking and highly acclaimed work of the Cube-Painting-Sculpture in 2016. Art historians have recognized this as the symbiosis of these art genres and thus as an answer to the Paragone dispute that has existed since antiquity. With the Cube-Paintings, Castello overcame the ever-present separation of sculpture and painting and transforms large size oil-paintings into 3-dimensional objects. Using the imagery of popular culture, his work strongly comments on the consumer world and its relationship to art and society, continuing perspectives of
Andy Warhol. Involved in the street art movement in Germany during the late 1990s, Castello relocated to Paris in 2004 and moved later to New York City where he developed his todays unparalleled style. Castello currently lives and works between New York and Switzerland.
