Early in the 1980s, with the U.S. Senate approaching its bicentennial, Senator Robert Byrd decided to compile a history of the Senate. He and staff assisting him compiled dozens of speeches that he gave on the Senate floor during the 1980s describing the history of institution from when it first met in 1789 up until the present day (1989).
All of the biggest men to have served in the Senate are covered, such as Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John C. Calhoun, Robert La Follette, Robert Taft, Mike Mansfield, and many others. The book describes how these figures worked in the Senate and the politics of their time. The events themselves are also important and the book recalls some of the most notable ones such as the caning of Charles Sumner or the confusing ramblings of Joseph McCarthy during the Red Scare.
All in all a very enjoyable and readable book.
