Mara Wilson reveals her painful past when filming ‘Matilda’

In a recent exclusive interview with a prominent media outlet, Mara Wilson, the beloved child star of the ’90s, opened up about her life beyond the silver screen. Known for her memorable roles in iconic films, Wilson took a significant hiatus from acting, leaving fans curious about her journey since then.

Reflecting on her early years, Wilson revealed the profound impact of her mother’s early passing when she was just eight years old, two months before the premiere of ‘Matilda’. “After my mother died, film became my anchor,” she shared candidly. “I struggled with depression and anxiety, and during that time, even Matilda’s release is a blur to me.”

Wilson also shared insights into the challenges she faced while growing up in the spotlight. Recalling her experience during the filming of “Thomas and the Magic Railroad,” she described the discomfort of going through puberty on set. “It was mortifying. I felt embarrassed and humiliated,” she admitted, recounting the awkwardness of wearing sports bras meant to bind her chest.

Despite her success on screen, Wilson confessed to grappling with a sense of inferiority, believing that people admired her characters more than her true self. “I idolized Matilda; she felt like an older sister overshadowing me,” she admitted. However, a pivotal moment came when a teacher encouraged her to differentiate herself from her roles, leading Wilson to embrace her own talents and potential.

While Wilson occasionally makes appearances in front of the camera, she has found a new passion in writing.
