Following an incredible slide down Brisbane’s pecking order, battle-hardened hooker Jake Turpin will follow prop Matt Lodge and play for the Sydney Roosters in 2023.

Turpin, like Lodge, has been dumped from the Broncos and the Roosters have handed him a NRL lifeline to replace Sam Verrills who has committed to the Gold Coast Titans.

The courageous Turpin will be a handy backup to Brandon Smith, with the latter committing to the Sydney club at the end of 2021 but finishing up with the Storm this season.

Turpin, 25, started the year as Brisbane’s No.1 hooker but fell behind Cory Paix and Billy Walters during the Broncos’ early-season form struggles.

He has played 60 games for the club since 2018, and captained them in three games in 2021.

He told News Corp last month: “My management are working hard to find something.

“I have to put my best foot forward over the last few games and if I’m playing good footy that will sort itself out.

“I’m sure my management are working hard on (trying to find a new deal) now ... I just need to play good footy.”

And that he did, working his way back into the team and earning praise from the club’s football boss Ben Ikin.

“Jake is a good consistent player who is very well respected by his teammates,” Ikin said.

“You can see how much he stiffens up the middle defensively when he is out there.

“Over time he has worked hard to get more in his game creatively.

“He asked for a release earlier this year, but since coming back into the side he has done a good job.”

Turpin was originally linked to Newcastle earlier in the season before signing with the Roosters.
