The real % breakdown of III

This is the first in a series of posts I'll be doing on this subject on each of the game boards.

Recently while doing some GTA 100% replays I became curious as to exactly how each game handles its percentage breakdown. We all know you can earn up to 100% in any GTA title but how many objectives does each game have? What does the game even count as an objective? What percent of that 100% do you get for each one? So basically I did the research and found out.

It's pretty common knowledge that GTA III has 154 objective points, which divided evenly into 100% nets you roughly 0.65% (~0.6493506494). What is lesser known however is what in the game constitutes those 154 objectives. So here's a breakdown and some brief explanations for anyone curious about this. The game does not show you decimal places and instead only displays the last whole number you passed. All figures I have listed are slightly rounded for simplicity.

The in game stats menu lists there being 73 missions. That total is reached by adding 48 story missions, 17 payphone missions, 4 offroad/checkpoint missions, and 4 RC missions. Of course you get one objective point upon completion for each one.

73 Missions - 47.38% total, which consists of:

:48 Story Missions - 31.15%:

1 - Give Me Liberty & Luigi's Girls

:4 Off Road Missions - 2.6%:

1 - Patriot Playground
2 - A Ride in the Park
3 - Gripped
4 - Multistory Mayhem

:4 RC Missions - 2.6%:

1 - Diablo Destruction
2 - Mafia Massacre
3 - Casino Calamity
4 - Rumpo Rampage

The game contains 20 rampages, and a bit unfairly, you are only reward a single objective point upon completing all 20. This is also true of Vice City and it's whopping 35 rampages, but we'll get to that on that board. It is fairly typical of GTA games that the most time consuming tasks in the games reward you with the smallest percentages.

:1 set of 20 Rampages - 0.65%:

In this game you get an objective point each time you're given a reward for completing a side mission. In this case that means you get one objective point for every 10 packages collected ie. every time you receive a new weapon at your safehouses.

:10 sets of 10 Hidden Packages, 100 total - 6.5%:

1 - Hidden Packages 1-10 - Pistol
2 - Hidden Packages 11-20 - Uz-I
3 - Hidden Packages 21-30 - Grenades
4 - Hidden Packages 31-40 - Shotgun
5 - Hidden Packages 41-50 - Armor
6 - Hidden Packages 51-60 - Molotovs
7 - Hidden Packages 61-70 - AK
8 - Hidden Packages 71-80 - Sniper
9 - Hidden Packages 81-90 - M16
10 - Hidden Packages 91-100 - Rocket launcher

Much like rampages there are 20 stunt jumps. Luckily, you're given an objective point for every single one, making them a surprising chunk of your total. This is even more noticeable in Vice City where there are 36 jumps for a huge ~23%

:20 Unique Stunt Jumps - 13%:

1 - Red Light
2 - Chinatown
3 - Callahan Bridge 1
4 - Callahan Bridge 2
5 - Trenton
6 - Portland Harbor
7 - Atlantic Quays 1
8 - Atlantic Quays 2
9 - Newport 1
10 - Newport 2
11 - Newport 3
12 - Belleville Park
13 - Cedar Grove
14 - Pike Creek 1
15 - Pike Creek 2
16 - Wichita Gardens
17 - Francis Intl. 1
18 - Franics Intl. 2
19 - Franci Intl. 3
20 - Francis Intl. 4

As stated before you receive an objective point for every side mission reward. This comes into play here.

:11 Vehicle Side Missions & Rewards  - 7.14%:

1 - Taxi Driver, 100 fares - Borgnine
2 - Paramedic, 36 patients - Health
3 - Paramedic, 78 patients - Adrenaline
4 - Paramedic, 12 levels - Infinite Sprint
5 - Vigilante, 10 Portland criminals - Bribe 1
6 - Vigilante, 10 Portland criminals - Bribe 2
7 - Vigilante, 10 Staunton criminals - Bribe 3
8 - Vigilante, 10 Staunton criminals - Bribe 4
9 - Vigilante, 10 Shoreside criminals - Bribe 5
10 - Vigilante, 10 Shoreside criminals - Bribe 6
11 - Firefighter, 60 fires - Flamethrower

Finally there are three import/export lists, but there are two different ways in which they're handled. For the two regular garages you receive an objective point for every single vehicle at the time of collection. As you can imagine they add up to a substantial amount of your total.

:16 Portland Import/Export Vehicles - 10.4%:

1 - Securicar
2 - Moonbeam
3 - Coach
4 - Flatbed
5 - Linerunner
6 - Trashmaster
7 - Patriot
8 - Mr. Whoopee
9 - Blista
10 - Mule
11 - Yankee
12 - Bobcat
13 - Dodo
14 - Bus
15 - Rumpo
16 - Pony

:16 Shoreside Import/Export Vehicles - 10.4%:

1 - Sentinel
2 - Cheetah
3 - Banshee
4 - Idaho
5 - Infernus
6 - Taxi
7 - Kuruma
8 - Stretch
9 - Perennial
10 - Stinger
11 - Manana
12 - Landstalker
13 - Stallion
14 - BF Injection
15 - Cabbie
16 - Esperanto

Finally you have the emergency vehicles crane. You still get a point for each vehicle but you only receive it as a lump sum after all 7 have been delivered. This oddity is actually what inspired me to look into this as the Rhino was the last thing I did in my recent 100% run of III, bumping me from 95% to 100% which I found very odd.

:7 Emergency Vehicles - 4.55%:

1 - Ambulance
2 - Fire Truck
3 - Police
4 - Enforcer
5 - FBI Car
6 - Barracks
7 - Rhino

Summary:

73 Missions
1 set of 20 Rampages
10 sets of 10 Hidden Packages
20 Unique Stunt Jumps
11 Vehicle Side Missions & Rewards
16 Portland Import/Export Vehicles
16 Shoreside Import/Export Vehicles
7 Emergency Vehicles

154 Total

Hopefully this is interesting to some and helpful as a definitive guide to 100% in GTA III. I will be doing similar posts on the other games in coming days so if you enjoyed this stay tuned.

Nice job, I like how you did this list. I also think that it's good to mention about the Paramedic missions bug which allows you to exceed 100% completion.

Great guide. I'm looking forward to seeing similar lists for other games.

A minor nitpick:

Quote

2 - Paramedic, 36 patients - Health
3 - Paramedic, 78 patients - Adrenaline

The required numbers are 35 and 70 respectively, however you need to complete the whole level during which the patients are saved to unlock the rewards.

Yeah I was unsure about the actual numbers so I just put the number you'd be at after completing levels 8 and 12 respectively. Thanks for the clarified info.

You beat me to it, heh! I've broken down III, VC, SA and VCS (PS2) several years ago, but, unfortunately, was long gone from the Forums to share my finds.

Still, it's great to see that I'm not the only one who ever bothered themselves with this question. So congratulations on a job well done, and a thank you from the interested part of the community!

Thanks for the response, I feel the same way. Nice to see others are interested in the inner workings of the games.

And I've worked up the post for Vice City now, if anyone would like to take a look at it.

I've just finished writing up the thread for Advance which also includes soundtrack information for that game which I put together because it is impossible to find anywhere else. I intended to have all of these written up by the end of December but unfortunately suffered a death in the family followed by a medical issue of my own that required a hospital stay and surgery (I'm fine now btw, no illness, just a herniated disc which was painful but successfully treated). Haven't had much time or energy for hobbies but we're back in business now. Figured III board users would be the most interested in this game. I really appreciate anyone who reads and comments.

I don't know about you, but these missions are hella difficult imo. Gripped is especially hard.

GTA failer

Great work on this, @KGBeast. I really enjoyed learning the details of how the ingame percentage is tracked in GTA III.  I was most surprised by the difference between when you're awarded objective points for bringing emergency vehicles to the crane versus bringing vehicles to the two import/export garages. So strange!

I'm making a really detailed series of youtube videos on GTA III and I made a video all about completion percentage using your post as the basis of the video. Check it out if you're interested!
