In November 2022, Mark S. Miller, Ph.D., was elected Midlothian District Supervisor in a special election and took his oath of office on November 16, 2022. He was re-elected in November 2023 and began his first term of four years on January 1, 2024.

Background

Dr. Miller was born in Virginia while his father served in the Army at Fort Gregg-Adams. Soon after Dr. Miller's birth, his father was honorably discharged and the family moved to Norristown, Pennsylvania. His father worked as a research chemist for the Department of Agriculture for the next 40 years, and his mother worked as a bookkeeper.

Education

After graduating from high school, Dr. Miller completed his undergraduate degree in secondary education in English (BA) from the University of Pittsburgh, a master’s degree (MS) in psychology from Shippensburg University and a doctorate degree in clinical psychology (Ph.D.) from the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is licensed in Virginia as a professional counselor (LPC) and certified as a substance abuse counselor (CSAC).

Employment

For the past 10 years, Dr. Miller has been serving as a professional counselor at Brightpoint Community College. Prior to this position, he worked for a short time for Good Neighbor Community Services and for Chesterfield Mental Health for 13 years, first as a senior clinician and then promoted to services supervisor assisting individuals diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Dr. Miller was named "Employee of the Year" for Chesterfield Mental Health Support Services in 2007. Prior to working for Chesterfield Mental Health Support Services, he served as a drug treatment counselor for Chippenham Hospital's Tucker Pavilion.

Prior to living in Virginia, Dr. Miller served as a long-term substitute high school English teacher for Pittsburgh Public Schools, and a drug treatment counselor for the New Bridge Foundation located in Berkeley, California.

Family

Dr. Miller has lived in Midlothian for the past 25 years with his wife, Jennifer, their two adult daughters and their three cats.
