Peter Gordon’s LENINGRAD XPRESS LENINGRAD XPRESS comes from the evening train from Berlin to Warsaw which Gordon took in the winter of 1988. The music of LENINGRAD XPRESS has narrative, lyricism and an Eastern Europe quality reflecting Gordon’s simultaneous looking towards the future and searching for his ancestral past.
Many of the composition on this CD originated as parts of score for Theatre (Return to Alphaville for Falso Movimento, Mario Martone’s Woyzeck), dance (An Amnesia for the Stephan Petronio Company) or live video performance (Return of the Native by Peter Gordon and Kit Fitzgerald). In creating the album Gordon specially edited, re-recorded and composed new material for the CD presentation, LENINGRAD XPRESS has very few machine derived rhythms or synthesisers. The 11 selection of the CD feature a predominantly acoustic ensemble, including veteran members of Gordon ‘s Love Of Life Orchestra, such as guitarist and associate producer Ned Sublette, percussionist and toy specialist David van Tieghem, the amazing keyboardist Blue Gene Tyranny, bassist Tony Garnier and trombonist Peter Zummo. Also appearing are saxophone virtuoso Lenny Pickett, on numerous wind instruments, Polish vocalist and hurdy-gurdy player Mieczyslaw Litwinski, jazz drummer Grady Tate, New Music /Jazz bassist Mark Dresser, and symphonic cellist / Klezmer bandleader Ron Robboy.
