The Vasa Ship
The Vasa ship sank in 1628 during its maiden voyage and stayed on the bottom of the sea for 333 years before it was salvaged in 1961. Since then, the ship has been restored to its former glory for many years.
Since 1990, the old royal ship from the 1600s can be seen at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. The ship has a total length of 69 meters and is one of the best-preserved warships from this time period.
In total, there were also 64 canons on board the ships during the maiden voyage. The canons were in various sizes, whereas the largest ones could shoot cannonballs that weighed 10 kilos each.

More than 95% of the ship’s original parts are still preserved, whereof hundreds of beautiful carved sculptures and details. They can be seen on the Vasa Ship, and visitors can also learn more about the ship from the movie about Vasa, which is available in 13 different languages.

More information about the Vasa Museum
The Vasa Museum State museum on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm. It’s one of the State Maritime museums and the current building has been open to visitors since 15 June 1990.
The building is the result of a Nordic architecture competition, that was won by Månsson & Dahlbäck. The construction was started in 1986 and was later renovated in 2013 where an additional exhibition hall was added.
The Vasa Museum is one of the most visited museums with some 1,5 million visitors every year. Children and teens up to and including 18 years have free entrance. Visiting the Vasa Museum is something that most Swedish students will do with their school class since it displays an important part of Sweden’s history.
The museum is also well-renowned by international visitors, and it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in Stockholm. In addition to the exhibitions, there is also a nice restaurant as well as a shop and garden.

Guided tours

How to get to the Vasa Museum
Getting to the Vasa Museum is easy by public transportation, especially from central Stockholm. You can either take the bus, tram, or boat. There are also great bicycle roads if you rent a bike or have your own.
It’s not recommended to drive here by car since parking spaces are limited.
Bus
- Buss 67. Hop off at Nordiska museet/Vasamuseet

Tram
Tram number 7 stops just outside the building. Hop off at the stop called “Nordiska museet/Vasamuseet”.
Boat
- From Slussen you can take the Djurgården ferry
- During the summer, you can also take a ferry from Nybroplan
Vasa Museum parking
There is a smaller parking lot which is located to the right after the bridge to Djurgården. The Vasa Museum itself recommends that you park somewhere around Östermalm if you come here by car.
