My experience at Vermont Academy can be explained within four groupings school-life balance, extracurriculars, independence/responsibility, and geography. School-life balance: as Vermont Academy is a private school it can sometimes be hard to separate anything from school as it is where you live, eat, sleep, and socialize. you will find the clubs, sports, and extracurriculars to be led and taught by the teachers who might also teach your classes, this separation can be a positive or negative for some as it may be preferable to forge a stronger connection with your teacher to do everything with the same people can become stuffy and repetitive as it is hard to find an activity that could quench your thirst to put yourself out there. Sports can be seen as a strength of Vermont Academy as many students who are performing at a high level have flexible enough schedules to pursue challenging courses instead of missing out on those opportunities.
Absolutely the best choice for a boarding school for our son! VA is a small and personable school that teaches your child to learn - life experiences, educational ambitions, and stepping outside their comfort zone - all in a safe, nurturing, and amazingly beautiful environment. The faculty and staff are available for extra assistance if needed, positive reinforcement, and discipline when necessary. My son transferred to VA and reclassified as a junior for the 2022-2023 academic year. It was his first time at a boarding school and when he struggled, the faculty, staff, and peers supported him to succeed and soar! The academics, athletics, and activities for the students are top-notch and well-balanced. I would not hesitate to recommend Vermont Academy as I have had the pleasure of watching my son develop last year, look forward to him graduating this academic year, and forever holding VA in our hearts. Wish we had sent him sooner!
Initially, Vermont Academy was not on our radar, primarily due to the 8+ hour distance from our home, however, as soon as we connected with Nora and her Admissions team, our child and we felt welcomed and known so it made ultimately choosing VA versus other schools very easy. VA made every effort to answer questions and make connections regarding academics, athletics, leadership opportunities, social/dorm life, etc., so when our child joined the school he felt known and embraced, making it easy for him to jump in and excel, as well as to take some risks. The school culture is supportive yet encourages a competitive spirit academically and athletically, and the teachers are knowledgeable and engaging and work to know their students as many are also dorm parents, advisers and coaches. The school leadership, faculty, students and parents all are actively committed to efforts to grow and improve what is already an amazing educational, athletic and artistic experience and charming campus.
