Denmark, a small country famous for Hans Christian Andersen and the Little Mermaid, has consistently been voted as having the happiest people in the world for over 40 years in a row. In 2013 they were, again voted in first place by the World Happiness Report. What is the secret to their satisfied success? This deeply insightful book takes a look at the way Danish children are raised and offers a profound parenting theory that claims to be the at the crux of their continued happiness. Respected Danish psychotherapist and American author, Sandahl and Alexander, have teamed up to share some compelling research and experience that gives an eye-opening look at Danish parenting and life philosophy that yields some pretty powerful results. The results of which can be seen in the World Happiness report year after year. In the easy to remember acronym "parent"- play, authenticity, reframing, empathy, no ultimatums and togetherness or "hygge"- The Danish Way of parenting lays out the groundwork for how to raise happy kids, who go on to raise their own happy kids and the cycles repeats itself naturally. Alexander's personal experience as a mother married into the Danish culture and Sandahl's expert opinion as a respected psychotherapist along with numerous supporting studies, make it a fascinating read for parents and non-parents alike. By learning how to practice "hygge", empathy and reframing, individuals and whole families can start improving their wellbeing immediately! Sandahl and Alexander ask the reader to remove their cultural based parenting glasses for a moment and try on a "Danish Way" of seeing things. With this new perspective along with many helpful tips, The Danish Way can help people from any culture cultivate the happiest people in the world in their own backyard. Could not put it down. The combination of story, studies, and culture is captivating. This book will make you consider not just how you want to raise your own children but how you were raised as well. Some parts may even start a healing process for yourself in practicing these methods as a sort of reparenting to the child still deep inside and reframing of the world around you.

I checked this book out of our library so many times that I finally just bought my own copy. :) Thoughtful and insightful, this book has some great messages about going through life for anyone of any age, but giving your children the gift of being able to put life in a "Danish" perspective will certainly serve them well! Since I read this book for the first time a few years ago, I've seen my older kids shift their perspectives and being able to put the techniques into practice from the beginning with my younger kids, it's been amazing to watch them develop patience, tenacity, and empathy. I even find myself a happier person, communicating better, and with a kinder outlook towards the world after taking the messages in this book to heart and I often recommend it to others!

It's a relatively short book as well and well laid out by the authors so it's easy to pick out the key points and refer back to it.

This book is incredibly insightful, inspiring and informative. I love that it’s backed by studies and not just opinions. I’ve read it at-least 5 times and we try to read it as our kid enters into a new stage just as a good refresher. I believe it will help to raise strong, empathetic and kind kids.

This was overall a really good parenting book--easy, quick read, and I loved--LOVED-- the first few chapters on teaching empathy, reframing, play and authenticity and should be read by every human being as a requirement for life, not just for parenting, but for looking at life in a different more positive and an understanding way. But I don't give a 5 star for a couple of reasons.

First, some of the way that she writes is a little bit annoying at times. She keeps reminding the reader that they are the happiest people so everything they do must be right. I remember watching a documentary or something on the fact that Danes are the happiest people in the world, and when several Danes were told that by the interviewer, they responded first with surprise and then said that the reason was probably because they had low expectations. It is nonetheless a good read and this little bit was easy to skim over.

The second reason I cannot give it 5 stars is that the chapter on no ultimatums sort of lost me. I wish I would have skipped it, actually, because it tainted how much I loved the rest of the book. She seems to assume that all children act rationally and can be reasoned with all the time and if you parent them with authority you will eventually resort to what she seems to consider the American thing to do i.e. to parent with "fear" and beat your children or scream at them. Balderdash, all. You can parent with authority and at the same time respect them, not beat your kids or make them fear you.

Ultimately, it is worth the read and I will recommend it to friends. You might like the no ultimatums parenting--it might work for your parenting style and you might have extremely reasonable kids, or if you think it might annoy you and ruin the book for you, tear that chapter out and read a discipline book by Ray Guarendi.

I really enjoyed this book as I feel Americans put way too much pressure on their children. I love how it reviews how 'laid back' the Danish are in raising children in the sense that they allow their children to explore and figure out their own boundaries - I can see how it will build confidence in children. I definitely would recommend this book to friends or new moms!

This book was fantastic. I have a 20 month old and have been reading book after book on gentle parenting, mindful parenting, Montessori methods, etc. These books all basically say the same thing but this book in particular gets right to the point with actionable steps you can implement. There’s no fluff in this book, it’s a very quick and enjoyable read. And the way it’s written is easy to understand. I’ve read a lot of books about hygge and raising happy kids but something about this book made all of these concepts so easy to understand and apply immediately. It’s one I’ll ask my husband to read as well. It’s definitely a book I’m going to revisit over the years as my son gets older because it’ll be a good reminder of how to manage my own feelings throughout the different stages of childhood.

Such a great read for new parents

I stumbled onto this while reading Meik Wiking's "The Little Book of Hygge". I found it very enlightening, and I think if you were only going to read two parenting books, this and Simplicity Parenting would suffice. This book is about the authors' own enlightenment: one as an American married to Dane, realizing the cultural differences; one as a native, realizing her country does have its own way of doing things.

Some of this just hearkens back to my childhood, before cable, internet, and the commercialization of childhood. Some of it probably never occurred to many Americans, because we were raised with other cultural influences.

When I got this , I read it right away, and then immediately read it again. I plan to read it again soon. What I like most is how easy it is to understand. It's two Moms, discussing parenting, education, and children. One happens to be a child psychologist. But it's still just two Moms. Which also makes the insights powerful, as they both experienced the results in their own lives.

Buy it. You won't regret it. Unless you WANT a super-scientific, academic book.

It's ok, very technical and straightforward with few stories relating to Danish culture. I got this recommendation after reading Bringing Up Bebe which gave so many references and stories about raising kids in France and the French culture that I was expecting it from this book as well. This book is more technical giving a lot of psychological perspectives with very few relatable stories. It's a quick read, some terms are good, but don't get it expecting to learn a lot about Danish culture.
