Yes, you will need to reconfigure your extender if you replace your existing router/gateway. You can reconfigure your extender either via WPS connection or using the web GUI.
This article will walk you through how to reconfigure your extender with your new router/gateway.
WPS
Note: WPS does not support WEP wireless encryption. If your router’s wireless encryption is set to WEP, please follow the steps to reconfigure using web GUI.
- If your router/gateway supports WPS, press the WPS button on your router/gateway for 5 seconds until the WPS indicator lights/blinks to initiate the connection.
- Within 60 seconds, press and hold the WPS button on your extender for 5 seconds.
- Wait for up to 5 minutes until the WPS indicator stop blinking.
- Check if the router link LED on your extender is ON or OFF.
- If the link LED is ON, your extender successfully connected to your router’s Wi-Fi network.
- If the link LED is OFF, the extender failed to connect to the router Wi-Fi network, please repeat steps 1-3 to try again.
- If your extender and router are dual band devices, repeat steps 1-4 to configure the 5GHz network.
- Move your extender to its preferred location which is ideally halfway between your router and the area with poor Wi-Fi signal.
Web GUI
- Reset the extender by pressing and holding the reset button for 10 seconds using a paper clip or pin.
- Once extender has completed its reboot, connect your device to the default SSID (NETGEAR_EXT).
- Open a browser and you will automatically directed to the extender setup page. If not, enter http://mywifiext.net or 192.168.1.250 in the address bar of your browser.
- Click NEW EXTENDER SETUP button.
- Create a new account by filling out the required fields and click NEXT to continue.
Note: If your extender supports AP mode, you will be prompted to select how you would like to setup your extender. Select the “Wi-Fi Range Extender” button.
- The extender will search and display the Wi-Fi networks available in your area.
- Select the Wi-Fi network of your router/gateway and click the NEXT button.
Note: If both your router and extender devices support the 5GHz band then select the router/gateways 5GHz network under the 5GHz network list.
- In the password (network key) field, enter the network password for the network you selected and click NEXT button.
- Set the network name (SSID) and password (network key) of your new extender network and click to NEXT.
- Once the network list has populated, connect your wireless device to the new extender Wi-Fi network using the SSID and Password created in the step above.
- Click the Continue button to complete the setup.
- Click the NEXT button to proceed to the registration process. If product is already registered, click Skip Registration.
- Move your extender to its preferred location which is ideally halfway between your router and the area with poor Wi-Fi signal.
