At the heart of the New Rochelle’s growth and change is the city’s transit center – the New Rochelle regional-rail train station and Intermodal Transportation Center. While the transit center is a true multi-modal hub, it is not well connected to the city; it sits below surrounding grade and is locked in by the rail tracks to the south and highway to the north. The city seeks to redesign the New Rochelle Transit Center to better serve residents and users. New Rochelle envisions a visionary, attractive, convenient, and well-connected transit center that involves state-of-the-art technology and sustainable design.  

In addition to being the center of the city’s downtown revitalization, the New Rochelle train station is the busiest station along the Metro-North New Haven Line in New York State outside of New York City (currently approx. 6,000 outbound riders per weekday) and is the only Amtrak stop in southern Westchester County servicing the Northeast Regional Line.  In just a few short years, New Rochelle will be the first Metro North stop in Westchester County to provide direct access to Penn Station.   Penn Station Access is expected to dramatically increase riders and transfers at New Rochelle to more than 15,000. A high functioning transit center will improve access to jobs in the entire region.

• The transit center redesign seeks to:
• Improve connections to the downtown, the west end, and the east end
• Provide local services and retail including dining and convenience retail
• Improve pedestrian safety and access
• Create a sense of arrival and place including wayfinding, a multiuse plaza, and green space
• Capitalize on the historic character of the train station building
• Introduce state-of-the-art sustainable features

To launch public engagement, the city has created an input survey to hear from commuters, visitors, and New Rochelle residents.
