Mötley Crüe returned last week with their first new single in years, and fans snapped the tune up in huge sums. The rock band’s “Dogs of War” has become a fast hit on a number of Billboard charts, bringing the group back to a number of tallies after a hiatus. The song even helps them hit a ranking that many would assume they’d ruled many times in the past.
“Dogs of War” debuts at No. 3 on the latest edition of the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart. Billboard publishes the tally each week to show which tracks in the genre have performed the best, using a methodology that combines sales, streams, and radio airplay. The latest from the Crüe succeeded across all of those metrics, which leads to its lofty starting point.
Believe it or not, but “Dogs of War” is the first hit for Mötley Crüe on the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart. While they may be one of the most recognizable and beloved names in the genre, they’re only just now arriving on this roster.
This fact doesn’t mean that Mötley Crüe is actually less successful than some may have thought. The Hot Hard Rock Songs chart was introduced years after the group’s moment in the spotlight came to a close. If it had been around when they were in their heyday, they likely would have ranked as one of the top names on the list.
“Dogs of War” earns the top debut on this week’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart. New tunes from groups like Whatsaheart, Rain City Drive, Dayseeker, and Black Veil Brides also launch on the tally, but none managed to reach the top 10 on their first try.
Mötley Crüe claims one of several new titles inside the top 10 on the hard rock list. As “Dogs of War” debuts at No. 3, Knocked Loose and Poppy push their new collaboration “Suffocate” from No. 21, where it debuted last frame, to No. 5. Sleep Theory’s “Fallout” breaks into the region as well, as it surges from No. 20 to No. 10.
“Dogs of War” is new to half a dozen Billboard charts this week. It appears even higher on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales tally, where it misses out on becoming a No. 1 smash by just one space. It also launches inside the top 10 on the Rock Digital Song Sales ranking, as it opens at No. 8.
