Amanda Seyfried walked the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art last night in a full silver ensemble, including a metallic wig with romantic swirls and a diamond ivy crown. But one vibrant color stood out in that shining icy sea: the violet on her lips.
In an ode to the 2024 gala’s “Garden of Time” dress code, Seyfried embraced floral elements both on her dress and as part of her glam, with the help of celebrity makeup artist Genevieve Herr. “Genevieve and I collaborated closely on the makeup inspired by the Prada dress,” Seyfried tells Bazaar. “The lip color represents one of the flowers blooming in the ‘Garden of Time’ that are also scattered across [my] dress, and the silvery shimmer of the rest of my makeup represents the dying garden [in] the story.” (The dress code was inspired by English author J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name.)
The floral-forward theme, plus the cool pale pink and metallic flower appliqués on Seyfried’s dress, made the Met Gala the perfect event for the bright violet lipstick, which Herr had stashed in her kit, but had never found the right time to use—until she saw the Mamma Mia! star’s dress. “Amanda’s lips were the main focus of the whole look. It’s a different shade than what she typically goes for—a violet with a light blue undertone,” Herr explains.
“Since [the Met Costume Institute’s spring exhibit] is about ‘Sleeping Beauties,’ I wanted it to seem as though Amanda was sleeping—and then all of sudden wakes up and her lips are the color of the flowers within the garden,” she says. “It was a reawakening in this beautiful garden.”
To balance out the shine from Seyfried’s dress, Herr kept the actor’s face matte. Since the lips were the main focal point, Herr defined the eyes ever so slightly with a soft gray shadow to “give the eyes a little shape.” She then added a light wash of silver shimmer, lots of mascara, and a few false lashes for further definition.
“Priming the face is crucial after skincare, because that is what keeps the makeup together and allows the makeup to stick well into the evening, without the use of lots of powder,” Herr says. She also sent Seyfried to the Met with a pack of blotting patters, for touch-ups in the T-zone area.
To fully prep the star’s skin for fashion’s big night out, Herr used handy skincare devices like the Shani Darden Facial Sculpting Wand, Lancôme Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate, and Lancôme Absolue Soft Cream. Seyfried also had her own ideas about prep, Herr says—adding that the actor likes to have fun ahead of the annual event.
“Oh my god, Amanda is a lot of fun while we get ready,” the artist says. “She brought a lot of natural snacks, like granola, and played her own music—this time, it was Taylor Swift, because that’s what relaxes her.’
Herr adds: “Amanda was telling us about the farm, the kids, and how they are about to get a peacock on the farm. She’s really an amazing girl and very down to earth. The farm keeps her very grounded.”
