Sky Sports' flagship football score updates programme, Gillette Soccer Saturday, is experiencing a significant change for the new 2023/24 season.

After decades as the face of the show, legendary presenter Jeff Stelling announced that he would no longer be part of the TV fixture after the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

As well as Stelling's departure, fans will notice a number of new faces among the alterations taking place to Soccer Saturday when the action resumes in August.

Who's going to be on the show and what else is going to be different? The Sporting News takes a look here.

Who are the new Soccer Saturday presenters and pundits?

A familiar face is replacing Stelling as the voice of the scores as they roll in on Saturdays: Simon Thomas. The presenter initially joined Sky Sports in 2005, working on Sky Sports News before becoming the lead EFL and Premier League host as his career progressed.

Now 50, Thomas signed off in 2018 following the death of his wife from blood cancer the previous year. "When I left Sky for very personal reasons, it was always said the door would be open if I ever wanted to return," he said when the news was announced.

"I never expected that Gillette Soccer Saturday would be the door that would open. Being asked to present this iconic show and follow in the footsteps of Jeff Stelling, an absolute giant of sports broadcasting, is a massive honour and one I simply cannot wait to get started on."

Ex-referee Mike Dean is the other major new addition to the lineup. Dean, who spent 22 of his 27 years in the middle as a Premier League adjudicator, says his involvement "feels a bit surreal" following his retirement after a season as a VAR official in 2022/23.

"With all the technology available in today's game, I think it's crucial that fans understand why decisions have been made," he said. "Even if they don't agree with them."

Sky has named some of the pundits who will be returning to the show in a new studio this season and confirmed that presenter Julian Warren will continue to present its midweek equivalent, Soccer Special.

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson is the longest-serving of the stars, first joining the show in 2006.

Paul Merson 2006 Two-time top-flight champion with Arsenal
Clinton Morrison 2018 Six-time Crystal Palace top scorer
Michael Dawson 2017 Carabao Cup winner with Tottenham
Sue Smith 2018 Two-time England player of the year
Kris Boyd 2020 Record scorer in a Scottish Premiership season

Why did Jeff Stelling leave Soccer Saturday?

Smooth-talking Stelling said he had "loved every moment" presenting Soccer Saturday for the company he joined in 1992.

As he had done so often on the show, the 68-year-old couldn't help referencing his beloved Hartlepool United – the non-league club he became president of in 2015 – in his farewell remarks.

He said: "It is now the right time to move on and give Sky Sports viewers a break from my relentless rants, bad gags and over-the-top celebrations of Hartlepool United goals. It's been a lot of fun – for me, at least."

Stelling had previously announced he would leave at the end of the 2021/22 season but then delayed the move. He revealed that he was leaving for good during a live broadcast, receiving a round of applause from the punditry panel.
