“Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen (UK) had amassed more than 1.6 billion global streams by December 2018, according to Universal Music Group. The iconic chart-topper from 1975 was written by Freddie Mercury and taken from his band’s A Night at the Opera album. The accompanying visuals, which transformed the music video into an art form, has also been a hit: on 22 July 2019, it became the first pre-1990s video to attain 1 billion YouTube views.

Other ‘golden oldies’ that have been popular with streamers worldwide in recent times include Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”, “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses and A-ha’s “Take on Me”.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” found a new audience on the release of the award-winning biographical film of the same name (2018), starring Rami Malek as Mercury.
