If you want to get to Altenburg on your own you might have a problem because nobody seems to know how to explain getting there. Everybody recommend taking the City tour bus.
Anyway, we didn't. We took the 910 bus from Stadtmitte/ZOB (or you can take it from Dom's Platz - it stops there) until Wildensorg Mitte stop (it is the last stop). From there you just have to locate the street called Die Bergner. On that street you'll find a sign reading Altenburg 500m. It is a hike of about 15-20 min.
When you get there have a cold beer and enjoy the scenery.

A must see! Get on the city tour bus- meets at the wooden bridge at Rathaus. 9 euro for a hop on, hop off tour. Best guide - interactive- that we have had in the last 4 countries.
A fantastic Photo opportunity area in the viewpoint.

Along with Bamberg the Altenburg, the fortress presiding over Bamberg is “a must see” Point Of Interest for any visitor of Germany. Most of the tourists are attracted by Rothenburg, Nurnberg, Heidelberg, Koln, Munich and Berlin, however only a few are lucky to land in Bamberg. This city is the only German City that survived the second WW without destruction, maintaining its initial medieval flair. The city from where the last crusade was stared and never ended... I could start a list with at least 30 unique points of interest specific to this city of Franconia however, I believe is better to enjoy the reality. Go and visit, you will never regret it and please include the Altenburg on this list. You might find yourself in a situation where, once in Bamberg you are not going to know which of the attractions, gardens, museums, cathedral or churches, clerical residences, streets with medieval specific flare, etc., don't forget the fortress. You deserve better.

Altenburg sits at the highest point of Bamberg and enjoys a fantastic view over the town and surrounding countryside. I walked from town, which is only about 1 mile but it's all uphill. You start on the pavement and end up climbing the hill through the forest.

The castle itself is free to enter and is quite nice, although there is very little to see other than the building itself and the views. There is a restaurant inside but there is no museum or exhibits to see. You can pay a small amount (€1 when I went, Sept 2015) to climb the tower, although it wasn't really worthwhile. From the top, you can only look out through dirty, closed windows, so the view is not as impressive as it is when you are outside.

The castle is worth visiting, if just for the view, although it's a steep walk. I would recommend walking, rather than taking the bus, because you get great views over the town once you leave the road and head up the walker's path.

When I explored the options to get here by public transport, there were none.

There are only two options to reach here: Drive in your car (or a taxi) or walk all the way.

I chose the latter. To go up, I used the Altenburger Strasse that starts from south of the Dom. After a point, the walking trail separates from the car route. It is greatly scenic with magnificent views of the Dom. But due to rain the route was quite slippery.

From the Altenburg the views are fantastic. You can get a full view of the town. Also make sure to climb up the watch tower. Though the steps are quite steep, the reward of a panoramic view is worth the climb.

On coming down, I chose the trail which goes on the other side to Widensorger Strasse. After about 750m of walking you can get to a bus stop which takes you to the town center (if you wish to). Otherwise continue walking on this road and follow the signs to Domplatz. Not very scenic but you get to walk on some nice cobbled streets with old houses.

Overall a good walking trail with fantastic views. But if you are traveling with children, I would suggest to think twice because the trails are quite narrow and steep at times.

Was my first time to visit this beautiful town, and I was surprise, definitely is my retire city, is really beautiful, its cathedral, cellars, channels, the view, the city of the seven hills and really romantic, you must try the rauchbier at schelenkerla haus, is dark and smoked, one of my best beer in the world, this town offers you a lot of thing to do, go the cathedral and tasted the local wines, or do the Bamberg bier tour, you will taste all locals beers, and see the whole town

What is more if you travel the whole #910 route, it will take you past a whole lot of other interesting places; in fact, go to the terminus high up in the hills then stay on it and go back the other way. After that ,hop on and off as many buses as you like !! An absolute winner for 3 Euros, cause this town is amazing. Buy the ticket at the usual places, but best to buy at the tourist office, where you will go to anyway.

You can not miss this place if you are in Bamberg. It is worth visiting this castle. It is like 'in the world of Harry Potter'.... maybe a little bit smaller but it gives you this impressions :)
