TRIPLE CD SET OF RARE JOHNNY CASH LIVE RECORDINGS As iconic a performer and composer as any who have emerged since the mid-1950s, Johnny Cash continues to delight and attract fans old and new, more than 15 years since the great man s sad passing in 2003. This triple disc set celebrates the live musical performances of Johnny Cash, when this formidable superstar was always at his most potent. Kicking off on Disc One with a couple of shows Cash played in 1958 and 1959, along with his Tennessee Two, for Country Style USA and Guest Star USA, public radio shows promoting applications to join the US army, and the purchase of US government bonds, respectively. Disc Two features another show of huge interest, this time from 1970, when Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter, performed in front of President Nixon and his aides at the White House. Including all the inter-song chat, plus a lengthy intro from the President, this rarely heard performance is another Cash oddity that fans will be hungry to hear. Disc Three concludes this sterling set with a show Johnny played at the University of Texas in Austin, in December 1994. Taking place a few months after the release of Cash s 81st studio album, the Rick Rubin produced masterpiece, and the record which put Cash back in the spotlight after some years in the wilderness, American Recordings, this majestic performance completes this compilation in style. For the serious collector of performances by Johnny Cash, this release has some interesting recordings. The biggest issue with this set are errors in the text and the mastering.

CD-1 has three “made for radio” shows that the notes credit to 1958 and 1959. Since Johnny talks about his next to last release and his current hit, that places the recording session around the summer of 1956. The third program is from 1959 since it includes some of his Columbia material. The notes also claim these recordings were from “live FM broadcasts”, but the disks were sent out to radio stations around the country with the idea that they would be aired as “public service” material. The first two shows were produced by the U.S. Army and the third one by the U.S. Treasury Department to sell savings bonds.

CD-2 is a recording of the famous concert at the Nixon White House on 17 April 1970. It may or may not have been broadcast live on the radio. The mix is not the best on the original master tape with the members of Johnny’s band so low that it sounds like a solo act. Towards the end of the performance, the other instruments and the Carter Family and Statler Brothers are blended so you can hear them. The biggest issue with this disk is the mastering error where you will find “Folsom Prison Blues” both on track 9 and again on track 10. He did not just repeat the song since both tracks are identical. Someone should have caught this mistake before releasing the set. The best thing about this CD is that it has the songs that were not included on the Legacy Bootleg Volume 3 release: “The Prisoner’s Song”, “Folsom Prison Blues”, “Jackson”, “Darlin’ Companion”, “Closing Medley” and the encore “Suppertime”.

CD-3 is a live concert at the University of Texas at Austin on 8 December 1994. The recording of the music is good, but it sounds like it may have come from the house soundboard since the response of the audience is so low in the mix it reduces the excitement level. At a running time of 77 minutes, you get all of Johnny’s solo work, but due to the length of the show they were forced to cut out all the songs with the other vocal members of his troupe.

The set is worth the money for what it offers, but it misses the mark is several ways. There is no booklet and the only notes are limited to a few lines. There is no excuse for the “Folsom Prison Blues” mastering error.
