After making a splash on Netflix with her adored and critically acclaimed teen romantic comedy series Never Have I Ever, Mindy Kaling is back with another hilarious comedy series on the streamer. This time around, she's teaming up with Academy Award-nominated actress Kate Hudson for Running Point, a basketball-centric workplace comedy.

On May 15, Netflix officially announced the title of the comedy series during its upfront presentation, at which Kaling and Hudson were on hand to promote their show to advertisers. Along with unveiling the thematically apt title, the streamer also released three first-look photos of Hudson and other cast members in action and confirmed that the series will be released in 2025.

Along with Hudson as the leading star and executive producer, Kaling calls on a couple of her frequent collaborators you'll recognize from her The Mindy Project days. Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen will be Kaling's fellow writers and executive producers, with Stassen acting as the showrunner on the series.

Now that production has gotten underway on the highly anticipated new comedy series, we're sharing everything fans need to know about Mindy Kaling's new Netflix show.

Plot

Prior to revealing the official title of Running Point, the streamer provided a lot of key plot details. Hudson headlines the series as the sole woman in a competitive family full of men, which has left her feeling more than a little underappreciated and undervalued. However, an unexpected twist of fate puts her in charge of the family business, giving her the chance to prove herself.

Here's the official synopsis via Netflix's press release:

"When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports."

Cast

As previously mentioned, Golden Globe winner Kate Hudson will lead the cast of the series. Shortly after her casting, Netflix announced Dollface star Brenda Song, The Other Two star Drew Tarver, and The Mick star Scott MacArthur joined the cast in three major roles.

Song will play the basketball team's chief of staff and long-time friend of the Gordon family Ali Lee. According to Netflix, Isla and Ali shared a dorm room in college. It's worth noting that Hudson and Song are about 10 years apart, so it'll be interesting to see the explanation for that detail. Meanwhile, Tarver and MacArthur will play Isla's brothers Sandy and Ness respectively.

On Feb. 21, five more cast members joined the series, though it's not immediately known whether they're main cast members or recurring. Fabrizio Guido will play stadium popcorn vendor Jackie, who's suddenly in the inner circle. Toby Sandeman will play the team's star player Marcus Winfield, while Chet Hanks plays the team's eccentric point guard Travis Bugg. Keyla Monterroso Mejia plays injury lawyer and Jackie's cousin Ana, and Roberto Sanchez plays board member Stephen Ramirez.

On May 15, Netflix confirmed another casting with the addition of New Girl and The Neighborhood star Max Greenfield as Lev Levy, who's Isla's supportive fiancé and a pediatrician. Given Greenfield's starring role on the CBS comedy series, which was recently renewed for season 7, his role is likely to be a recurring role, though we'll have to wait and see how many episode Lev appears in.

On May 30, Netflix announced Insecure and Top Gun: Maverick star Jay Ellis joined the cast in a "major recurring role" as Jay Brown. He's the head coach of the Waves basketball team whose peaceful methods have helped usher the team to bring in multiple championship wins. Isla and Jay will be working closely together with the team.

Filming updates

In late February 2024, Hudson shared a carousel of photos and videos to Instagram announcing the official beginning of filming on Running Point. "And so it begins! Already a blast," she said in the caption of the post, which first featured a photo of her sharing drinks and laughing with her on-screen brothers Scott MacArthur and Drew Tarver. Netflix hasn't revealed the production timeline for the series, but considering the first season contains 10 episodes and began filming in late February, we can expect the series to have continued production through the spring and likely wrap filming in May. Following production's wrap, the series will enter post-production for a few months before a now-confirmed release in 2025.

Release Prediction: January-March 2025
