A very beautiful presentation of one of the greatest songwriters to ever come out of Brazil - and any other country, for that matter. You get most of his most important songs in a bunch of different versions and the packaging is quite nice (if a bit impractical), with fine photos, illuminating essays and even an interview.

A box set with unusual program: Disc One is Vocal, Disc Two Instrumental and Disc Three showcases different versions of Jobim's most popular, enduring classics. This is an excellent jumping off point for those new to Jobim. There are illuminating interviews and a well-written bio inside and it's one of the least daunting career retrospectives I've come across. The selections are almost without exception representative and mesmerizing.

My brother purchased this set and loaned it to me for several weeks. Knowing that I am a Jobim fan, he knew I would enjoy this compilation. It's nice for the photos and liner notes.
The packaging is somewhat odd, put together like an old spiral notebook. The cd's are housed in construction paper type foldings that take about three times to unwrap, before finally getting to the cd. The notes are excellent with interviews from the Oscar Neves and Creed Taylor. They tell the stories of the glory days of the Bossa Nova and gives interesting insight of those wonderful days. The collection is organized in three ways. Jobim compositions sung, Jobim compositions instrumental, than other artists interpreting his works like Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Astrud Gilberto and others for the last cd. The collection itself gives a good cross section of his recordings. Some recordings from the sessions are so good, you want to hear the whole album! It would have been nice of Verve to include some rare or unreleased titles, but all of these songs are available on previous issues. So, is this set really essential? Well, if you are a Jobim collector, maybe, but only for the liner notes. The remastering is done well, but you can get the whole album of most of these songs with Verve's 20 bit remastering on the Verve by Request series. It makes for a nice compilation of his popular recordings in one set, but asking price is a little much, too much for three cd's. The set is not exactly a bargain. Even used, I've seen it priced above $30.00. So if you see a great deal on it used, get it. If not, you can probably pass on this and just get his individual albums.
