The “reboot” of The Office that we’ve all been talking about for more than six months is actually better described as a spinoff, given that it will bring back a key (if never-seen!) group of characters from the NBC series.
Peacock announced on Wednesday that it has ordered to series a new, yet-to-be-titled comedy from Greg Daniels (who adapted the UK’s The Office for us yanks) and Nathan for You co-creator Michael Koman.
In the new mockumentary-style series “set in the same universe” as NBC’s Steve Carell-fronted The Office,” the intrepid, tireless documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper, and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.
As previously reported, Domhnall Gleeson (Alice & Jack) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) will lead the ensemble cast when the series begins production in July.
“It’s been more than 10 years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” Lisa Katz, president, scripted content, NBCU Entertainment said in a statement. “In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”
The new series will be executive-produced by Daniels and Koman along with UK Office creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, plus Howard Klein, Ben Silverman and Banijay Americas (fka Reveille).
I wonder if they’ll name this “The Office: The Paper” or something like that, to reinforce the in-universe connection to “The Office”.
.
I’d love to see boxes of Dunder Mifflin paper all around the newspapers office…
Isn’t that sort of Not Dead Yet? Print Newspapers are dieing out. I should know since I was downsized out of Circulation a few years ago.
Not Dead Yet isn’t a mockumentary. The only thing they’d have in common is a newspaper setting.
It’s just like Lou Grant, too. And Early Edition. And
Didn’t Balki and Cousin Larry work at a Chicago newspaper office in Perfect Strangers? I smell a lawsuit coming. LOL
I actually love the idea of moving away from Dunder miflin and to the idea of a small town newspaper! That actually gives me more optimism about this project.
Who asked for this? How about A Different World spinoff? Tired of these dull shows always getting a reboot or spinoff….
As much as I would love a different world spin-off, I don’t think it’ll ever happen.
Two words.
Bill Cosby.
I don’t think anyone will go near a project tied towards him. Cosby may just been the creator, but that might be enough to say ‘no.’
Just wait until he dies then do the spinoff of the spinoff. Hell do a spinoff of the cosby show but just dont mention Cliff.
Still have to pay him. Roseanne still gets a creator paycheck from Disney for the Spinoff.
If they can do “Roseanne” without Roseanne, they could do a Cosby-created project without Cosby.
So you want a spin off of spin off?
Wouldn’t be the first time. NCIS is a spinoff of JAG and NCIS has had 1000 spinoffs.
Young Sheldon was a spinoff of TBBT and now is being spun off.
Oh I’m aware, but the OP is complaining about spin offs
No one wants anything tied to bil cosby.
If the Cosby angle is a no go, I vote for a Living Single continuation. The Equalizer is probably nearing it’s end date.
Living single would be great. Also Girlfriends.
“Who asked for this?”
Judging by the sixty billion streams The Office gets every day, probably everyone who isn’t you.
First Thoughts – Awesome!!! This will be interesting take.
Second Thoughts – either the paper is going to have boxes of Dunder Miflin Sabre paper in the office OR the reams of paper they use for the newspaper will be supplied by them. (They might have a “Thanks, Jim. The shipment arrived ahead of schedule. Tell Pam I say Hi” statement in the teaser, being said by the office manager or such).
Third Thoughts – so, Midwest… Might want to throw in a Parks and Rec easter egg. Something like “and we even have subscribers as far away as Snerling, Indiana”
Well Sabre doesn’t exist as of the end of season 8 of the office and Jim and Pam left Dunder Mifflin and Scranton in the finale, so it won’t be either of those.
Most likely, a Dwight reference I’d say. Or theyre doing a story on the Scranton Strangler and interview Toby.
I wonder if the newspaper uses Dunder Mifflin as their paper supplier.
Perhaps in the newsroom. Dunder Mifflin sold office paper and supplies, not newsprint paper.
I think the “never before seen” characters are going to be the film crew who shot the first office. So the team for that is doing a second set of this documentary series after the success of “The Office” 10 years ago.
Yes – it’s stated in the article: “[…] the intrepid, tireless documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject […]”
I give it 1-2 seasons.
Set in a small, mid-western town. So…..it will be non-diverse, conspiracy theory obsessed reporters? Or are those the just the small towns around me?
Just you and your hacky stereotyping.
The original show was diverse and in a smaller Midwest town. Even if the area in real life isn’t diverse it doesn’t matter to Hollywood where every show with a close group of friends or workplace has a perfect diversity rainbow of people which is absolutely not the norm lol.
Scranton is not a Midwest town. It 2 hours outside of both NYC and Philly. While The Office Scranton has a small town feel, real Scranton is not at all.
It would be awesome if Creed returned as a character named William Charles Schneider and wore a beard.
Agreed. I think either he or David Wallace are most likely to appear. Wallace if DM is the paper supplier for the newspaper. Creed cause it’d be easy and hilarious if he was just there again under another identity.
I hope they reboot some of the CW shows that were taken off the air too early
Well, I for one am looking forward to this, I only seen up to season 7, I couldn’t handle the Steve Carrel Replacements for the final 2 seasons.
I think there is a lot of potential here, but the problem with comedies over the last decade is that comedy is offensive to some people. Even a lot of The Office is considered offensive by today’s standards. Now, this issue should be a joke within the series, sure, but unless they’re willing to be a little offensive at times, it will fail as badly as most recent sitcoms. If they’re super careful to not offend anyone, it will come across as fake. That is bad for a mockumentary.
How many of the old Office characters would have to be reworked for today’s networks? (I say networks, because the audience itself probably never cared)
There are very funny popular comedies that aren’t generally considered offensive like Ted Lasso, Modern Family, Abott Elementary etc. It can be done but im sure this new office will get a beating from people unhappy with how it isn’t as funny as the original, which does happen to a lot of spin offs.
Nothing against the two actors named, but how do you get an natives of Ireland and Italy to the Midwest to run a small town newspaper? Were the Minnesota accents too strong for NBC?
ROTFLMFAO!!! (MN here! 🤣)
