The Community & its History

The Village of Yellow Springs, an eclectic community of nearly 3,500, is culturally-diverse, active, friendly and creative. An urban environment in the beautiful rolling hills of southwest Ohio, Yellow Springs sits on the Little Miami Scenic Trail and has nearly 100 shops, galleries and eateries in a walk-able downtown with a 1000 acre nature preserve as our backyard.

The actual Yellow Spring, located in Glen Helen Nature Preserve was discovered around 1800 and quickly became a major attraction for those seeking its curative waters. For more than one hundred years, the town was a popular health resort with hotels, spas, boarding houses and a tavern to serve travelers on the nearby stagecoach road. With the completion of the Little Miami Railroad in 1846, Yellow Springs became the center of trade and recreation for the region.

A Community of Lifelong Learners

Yellow Springs values and supports lifelong learning opportunities. The public schools, named Excellent with Distinction, offer a challenging environment with small class sizes geared to individual development focused on an innovative Project-Based Learning approach. The Community Children’s Center, Antioch School and Children’s Montessori Cooperative offer broad educational alternatives focusing on child-centered programs for nursery through elementary.

Yellow Springs boasts two institutions of higher learning: Antioch University Midwest provides innovative programs to adult learners and Antioch College has a progressive new sustainability curriculum for undergraduates including an innovative co-op program. The collaborations among our educational institutions and local businesses stimulate exciting opportunities for the development of emerging technologies.

Yellow Springs is a great place for business. Sitting just 30 minutes from Dayton and 60 minutes from Cincinnati and Columbus, Yellow Springs offers a business environment rich in creativity, camaraderie and engagement. With a focus on health and wellness, alternative energy, local food, education and water technology, Yellow Springs has a tradition of fostering and nurturing small start-up businesses of all types including our largest employer, YSI Xylem incubated at Antioch College in the 1940’s.

Available business locations include the Center for Business and Education, a new 40-acre mixed commerce park adjacent to Antioch University Midwest with easy access to the regional transportation corridor. The Millworks Business Center offers affordable office, light industrial and artisan space with ample parking. A prime downtown site is available for mixed used retail, office and residential, located along the Little Miami Scenic Trail. Several smaller buildings offer a wide variety of office and production space in Yellow Springs.
