Apply for a visa in Australia to visit France
Visa applicants living in Australia have to submit their application in Australia at one of the VFS GLOBAL centers regardless of their location, in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaïde by appointment only.
Visa applications submitted in australia with VFS GLOBAL centers are examined by the Consulate General of France in sydney, which is the only administration authorized to take decisions about visas.
During our busy periods, it can take longer to secure an appointment. we recommend you to make sure your appointment is at least :
- Between 3 weeks and 6 months before the scheduled date of your departure for a short-stay visa
- Betwenn 3 weeks and 3 months before your arrival in France for a long-stay visa

Book an appointment
When you have all the required documents for your application, you can make an appointment with the local outsourcing provider VFS GLOBAL.
Please note, you must book an appointment for each person who applied for a visa.
If you are unable to attend your original appointment, you can reschedule your appointment twice, up to 72 hours before your original apopintment. Rescheduling is allowed only once. Is you cancel your appointment or do not attend your appointment, you will not be able to claim a reimbursement of VFS GLOBAL service fees.

Appointment waiting times :
During our busy periods, it takes longer to secure an appointment. We recommend you make sure your appointment is at least :
- Between 3 weeks and 6 months before the scheduled date of your departure for a short-stay visa
- Between 3 weeks and 3 months before your arrival in France for a long-stay visa.
Processing times :
The processing times for a visa application are given for as a guidance only, provided that a complete application is lodged.
Processing times are on average 3 weeks, transmission delay between the VFS centers and the consulate included, but may vary depending on certain categories of visa that require specific checks or consultation with different French authorities which may extend processing times (e.g. long-stay visa for CTOM, approximately 6 weeks ; long-stay visa for an independent profession or business creation, up to 4 months ; visa for professional purposes such as research, up to 6 weeks, etc.)
There is no expedited procedure and the visa section cannot influence the length of the process.
Where to lodge applications?
Lodging visa applications by residents of Australia can only be done by appointment with the company VFS GLOBAL.
The appointment can be made at any of the 5 VFS GLOBAL centres in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide).
Official passport holders must submit their application to the French Embassy in Canberra (see Particular situations).
Documents & Proofs :
- Student visa application (only) :it is possible to scan the supporting documents during the process.
- Please present originals of all necessary and supporting documents, as well as a copy of each original on the day of your appointment (only originals if you have already scanned them during your online application for a student visa).
- It is advisable to carefully check the list of supporting documents to prepare a complete application according to the category of visa you wish to apply for. On the day of your appointment, your application must contain the online application form, filled out, printed and signed, 2 ID photos in accordance with ICAO standards, an original and valid passport, accompanied by all supporting documents listed on the France-Visas receipt issued at the end of your online submission.
Please note that any incomplete application will result in at least a longer processing time, or even refusal of the visa.

You may track your visa application on the VFS GLOBAL online tracking by entering the reference number given to you and your last name.
Your passport can be collected from the VFS centre where you dropped it off by yourself or by a person authorised by you with a signed letter of authorisation, a photocopy of your ID and that of the authorised person. You will receive a notification to report to collect your passport.
VFS GLOBAL can also send your passport by mail (fee option)
Particular situations
Please, note that holders of diplomatic or service passport must submit their application directly to the Embassy of France in Canberra.
Visas issued to holders of a Diplomatic or Service passport in the prospect of their official duties are free of charge, provided a verbal note is presented to the visa section.
All persons residing in Salomon Islands wishing to apply :
- VFS GLOBAL Center in Australia for an ordinary short-stay or long-stay visa for France
- The visa section of the French Embassy in Canberra for diplomatic passports (please read the “Holders of official passport” section above).
In accordance with the existing agreements, Australian citizens may enter and stay in France without any visa for a period up to 90 days.
When entering the French territory after staying in one or several countries that are part of the Schengen Area, please note that the 90 days-period takes effect from the crossing of the external border of the Schengen Area.
Young Australians aged between 18 and 35 years old (up to the date of 36th birthday) can benefit from a working holidays visa for a stay in France that cannot exceed one year. They must have sufficient financial resources to supply their needs and can work to complete these resources.
The French Consulate in Sydney is authorized to issue short stay visas only, on behalf of the following African countries (Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Gabon, Mauritania) and for tourism only, as long as they do not have an Embassy or a Consulate in Australia. If applicable, please contact us.
For any other purposes (religious mission, work related trip, business trip and meetings, lectures, charity work, etc.) or for spending more than the allowed number of days, you must contact the immigration authorities of the relevant country directly.
Unlike a marriage, the PACS does not grant any particular right to stay in France. However, a long-stay “visitor” visa can be lodged in order to apply for a temporary “private and family” residence permit at the Prefecture after living together in France for one year and subject to meeting the required conditions (see here).
In this case, the "visitor" long-stay visa application must contain a recent PACS certificate (see here), as well as all the supporting documents required for a long-stay visitor visa with the exception of medical coverage.
Please note that the “visitor” long-stay visa does not allow you to work. If applicable, you must apply for a business long-stay visa.
For minors on a private or tourist visit, parental authorization must be completed in original version as well as, if applicable, by the host in France.
For schooling minors in France, parental authorization original version is required as well as a financial support commitment signed by the host organization or an individual host in France.
In addition to current nationalities not subject for a short stay visa (e.g. European citizens, Australian, New-Zealand …), the following nationalities are also exempt of short stay visa during a stopover of less than 24 hours in the French Overseas Territories (Bahrein, Belarus, China, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia and South Africa).
Fees
Please be careful : Beware of scams and unofficial websites proposing to pay for an appointment or for a French visa. Please refer only to the information and the links you will find on France-Visas website.
The fees required for filing a visa application are composed of :
- Fees receivable by the French administration (pdf) to process your visa application. The applicable fees are indicated in Euros (€). In order to have it in local currency (AUD), please convert the amount indicated by applying the following chancery rate. This fee collected by the administration is non-reimbursable, even if your visa application is rejected.
- Service fees collected by VFS GLOBAL when you submit your application to the external service provider. The basic service fees costs 40 euros in Sydney, 70 euros in other VFS GLOBAL centers per submitted application. Fees are paid online during your booking appointment in the local currency. Please note that service fees cannot be reimbursed.
