Editorial Reviews

Bullets fly and bathtub gin flows in Cole Porter’s 1930 Prohibition jape The New Yorkers, a gleefully amoral celebration of speakeasies, gangsters, society dames, and the great city they love. The musical centers on featherbrained socialite Alice Wentworth, whose bootlegger beau leads her on a madcap romp from Park Avenue to Sing Sing and back again. The New Yorkers produced a number of Broadway standards—“I Happen to Like New York,” “Love for Sale”—but much of the original material has been lost, making this Encores! production and cast album the most ambitious musical reconstruction ever!

This is a recording of the Encores! version of the New Yorkers. I saw the show, and it was highly entertaining and very well done. The cast is excellent, and the Encores! Orchestra is superb, as always. That said, although Encores! went to considerable effort to do a full restoration of the show, it is more like a revival. There are a few songs form the original that were not included, notably some of the Jimmy Durante numbers composed by the Schnozz himself rather than Porter. There also seems to have been a number or two created by and for Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians that was not included. In both cases, I think it's because the source material has been lost. There were also six interpolations from other Porter musicals, some of which worked better than others. In particular "Let's Not Talk About Love" from 1941's Let's Face It was a poor choice because it was one of Porter's list songs, full of contemporary references from the thirties and early forties, which were topical well after the 1930 setting of The New Yorkers. The more general interpolations work better, but I would still rather see "The Physician" (Nymph Errant, London 1933), "Night and Day" (from Gay Divorce, 1932) and "Most Gentlemen Don't Like Love" (Leave It to Me, 1938) in their original contexts, all shows Encores! hasn't tackled yet. And yes, this is just quibbles. This CD is a delightful listen. Now let's hope Encores! issues a CD from this season's upcoming Love Life. If ever a show needed a cast recording, that is the one.

Whatever must be said about the terrible human rights retaliation record of this Encores head and the City Center board which looks the other way to create art, or about their expanding Encores' once-extraordinary 1990s mission to include "Bye Bye Birdie" and "Pajama Game" ad Sondheim's "Follies" (who knew that if you did those shows, audiences would want to see them, LOL) - once in a while, they do something wonderful, something so extraordinary, like first taking such a major step towards filling in a gap in theater history that could never have been done commercially, only by a non-profit, with their truly historical 2017 restoration of the previously lost Cole Porter score of "The New Yorkers." And this is a breathtaking record of that amazing accomplishment.

This work brought to mind a classic New York Times opinion piece on good art brought to us by bad people.
Another current example people might know better, that T.S. Eliot may have wanted my religion of Judaism to stay far away from him and not have human rights, but if the critics say "Cats" turned out great, I'll still be there at the movie theater! Encores may be run for two decades now by a person (in his final season now) who never met a human rights law he didn't retaliate for or step on, and a Board that plays "see no evil" to allow history on this level to remain forever - but this taken on its own is not only entertaining, the main reason too buy it, but also a bonus: boon to Cole Porter historians and people who study that era.

I was thrilled when I spotted this album. Cast albums of old shows are rare. However, I was disappointed when I learned that this album contains only little more than half the music that audiences heard in 1930.

The original Porter songs are there all right, and the producers added several songs from other Porter shows to fill out the album, including: "You've Got That Thing" and "Please Don't Make Me Be Good" (Fifty Million Frenchmen); "Night and Day" (The Gay Divorce); "The Physician" (Nymph Errant).; "Most Gentlemen Don't Like Love" (Leave It to Me).

Jimmy Durante wrote five songs, two of which are recorded here: "Wood" and "The Hot Patata." Also contributing music and appearing in the show was Fred Waring, along with his band, The Pennsylvanians.

The best know song from The New Yorkers is undoubtedly "Love for Sale," which wasn't allowed on the radio because of its subject matter -- prostitution.

This is a good album to own. The singing is decent although I've heard better renditions of several of the songs, most notably on the album "How's Your Romance? Cole Porter in the 1930s."

The album notes point out that the original orchestrations were lost, so what you're hearing is an approximation of the score. The show ran from Dec. 8, 1930, to May 2, 1931, for 168 performances.

Two years after seeing the delightfully nutty Encores presentation of the New Yorkers, we are finally given the Xmas gift of the cast album. New Cole Porter is always welcome in my house, but this is so vibrant, so well played, so lushly orchestrated in the manner of 1930 that it is to be thought of as a meal and a half. I would recommend this to people who hunger for musicals as they should be. Tuneful witty naughty and filled with showtunes. Cole Porter Cole Porter Cole Porter. What more is there to say? Buy it, enjoy it and listen to no one who has even heard of Be More Chill. Thank you. No, you will thank me.

It's always gratifying when forgotten scores are given the Encores! treatment, including full-scale orchestrations that help bring their bygone eras back to life. But Cole Porter's THE NEW YORKERS is one of their finest -- a suave collection of songs unique in wit, universal in charm -- totally encapsulating the New York of the late '20s/early '30s.

The music is some of Porter's best, the performances are fun and energetic, and the recording captures it all -- including these new orchestrations -- beautifully. I know for certain that musical theatre fans won't be disappointed.

Long Live Encores! (and musicals like THE NEW YORKERS)!
