- Dave48838Greenville, Michigan640 contributionsStop by if you are in the neighborhoodThis front wall of this church was built adjacent to a slab of granite. Other rocks were added to the walls so the structure resembles a cave or grotto. The domed roof provides excellent acoustics. The church has a modern entrance with a reception desk and gift counter. Other than the architecture, there is little ornament in the church which beckons. I say that because there is a 5 Euro charge to get into the church up close. If you want to save your money, you can see the whole thing very well from the reception area. I would not say it is a "must see." We did pay the fee however, as we happened to visit on a Friday afternoon when they have a concert of experimental music. I still need to recheck the dictionary definition of "music" because I suspect this performance missed the mark. The performers may have been very talented but the caterwauling was the worst thing I have heard. By the way, the church offers no public restrooms.Visited October 2022Written 19 October 2022
- MargueriteevelNew York City, New York67 contributionsUnique place.I love visiting unique attractions and this giant circular "rock church" as it was referenced to me was simply stunning in its simplicity and beauty. Not large so easy to see it all on a short visit, and suitable for children. My daughter seemed fascinated. You feel like you're outside and inside at the same time, in nature and in a manmade structure at the same time. Beautiful to see the sunlight streaming through. Feels like you are outside and inside at the same time, part of nature and inside a manmade structure at the same timeVisited April 2022Written 6 March 2023
- Heli PHelsinki, Finland6,328 contributionsMusic resonates uniquelyI was overwhelmed by the impression live music made on the athmosphere of the building having never heard it before. This was an extempore visit to a free concert given by the official representative orchestra of Finland, the oldest professional too dating back to 1819. The Guards Band didn't play any classical military music but modern pieces by Finnish composers like Magnus Lindberg's Gran Duo. Sounds by the wind instruments resonated from the rock walls and copper cupola.Visited March 2022Written 31 March 2022

This place made me remember two feelings that I had almost forgotten:
Firstly, how much can mystical places and classical music feel magical when they’re combined –as it happened here.
Secondly, how awfully embarrassing it is to be a tourist sometimes.
Why? Because some people have no respect for anything.
The church had a pianist at the time of my visit and he was playing the most beautiful music I had heard in a long time (I’m not exaggerating; it was breathtaking) (they sell his CD in the shop btw)… when suddenly a big tour arrived and ruined everything; they just wouldn’t shut up! they were laughing, screaming, and walking everywhere like he wasn’t even there or like nothing mattered much; not understanding that part of the charm of the place is its serene beauty.
Also, even if the church was not in service at that moment, it’s still a church; it should be treated with dignity.
A woman –who looked absolutely superficial both inside and out– literally starting posing on the piano; touching it and trespassing the rope that protected the pianist. She was doing a whole photoshoot there. It looked like a joke. The musician seemed pissed too, and even stopped for a minute, but ultimately no one did anything (nor said anything) to her.
They desperately need more rules in this place, and more strictness.
I know that it is highly visited, but that’s more of a reason to have a controlled situation that helps to preserve it.
Other than that, absolutely beautiful experience. Obviously recommended when visiting Helsinki.

Very unique church when you expect all churches around here to be old. There is a 5 euro charge per person to get in. The only real view is from the inside. Pretty cool

The church with all its architectural grandiose, seem embedded underground, hence some call it the “rock church “ . What’s worth noticing is the minimalist design and acoustics stability inside. You feel like you’re in a library. Go up the stairs for a better panoramic view. Outside , the exterior looks very plain and simple.

We arrived in Helsinki by cruise ship and decided to explore this lovely city on foot. First off was this unique Church. It was very easy to reach from the Market Square near where our Shuttle had dropped us.
What a beautiful place this Church is, even full of tourists it is a calm peaceful place. The organ is just beautiful , unique in its construction. Unlike other Churches this one is so sparse, and that is what gives it its beauty. The simple alter and font are just beautiful.
Certainly a must see when in Helsinki.

Our Regent cruise highlights of Helsinki included a stop here at the church. Frankly, not meaning to be cynical, and acknowledging that the church interior is remarkable in terms of its construction in a rock pit, and its ceiling resembles a saucer from outer space, but having already seem plenty of photographs of the site, we were not particularly inspired by a visit to its interior.
There were a couple of very tacky souvenir shops outside the church, otherwise not much going on here.
Unfortunately, Helsinki in all seemed to be a rather modern, sterile city without the historic areas which characterize many other Baltic Sea ports, so we'd just say this site was one to check off the list as having been seen, and not much otherwise.

Hewn into the bedrock, this church is somewhere everyone must visit when in Helsinki.
It is a welcoming space and the most beautiful place of worship I have ever visited in its simplicity.

Beautiful (and different) church easily worth a visit. I started the line to get in at 9:40 and it was worth getting in first, before the immediate rush of tourists. Managed to get off a few shots before anyone else entered.

This church is completely unique. There's a small entrance fee and then you're allowed to explore the sanctuary. I found the experience to be peaceful and interesting. As Helsinki attractions go, I wouldn't go out of your way to stop here, but if you have the time and you're in this part of the city it's worth a quick stop.

Sorry Vicki,
I am not sure. I think it is likely to be open on December 6th for Independence Day. We travelled to Finland in October when the tourist season was "supposed" to be over, and found many tours unavailable. We found a tourist bus still available and travelled around Helsinki on this. Hop on hop off buses had ceased in September for the winter months.

We are visiting on Aug 6, 2018 and was wondering when is the best time to visit on a Monday.
We would like to avoid the massive people from the tour buses.

Hi, We visited with our large group of about 26 on a Monday afternoon, it was not that crowded, but we made it crowded! I really don't know what time would be best to visit, it is fairly small. I hope this helps you out.
Hola!
