      Critics Consensus

Bolstered by powerful lead performances from Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, and Tommy Lee Jones, No Country for Old Men finds the Coen brothers spinning cinematic gold out of Cormac McCarthy's grim, darkly funny novel.

Wendy Ide Times (UK) Roger Deakins’s cinematography is as much a star of the film as any of the cast. Nov 21, 2023 Full Review Joe Sommerlad Independent (UK) The Coen Brothers are back with a triumphant return to form. Feb 28, 2018 Full Review Liz Hoggard London Evening Standard The lack of respect for the body, the sheer bloody aftermath depresses me. Yes, they may handle the killing with verve and ironic tension, but this is a Coen brothers film too far. Jan 11, 2018 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) This is easily one of the best films the Coens have made, and it’s absolutely one of the greats we’ll remember for decades to come. Feb 22, 2024 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies No Country for Old Men is in the top tier of the Coen Brothers filmography and is among the best films they have ever made. Rated: 5/5 Feb 21, 2024 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand A model of simple, strong, evocative storytelling pared down to the bone, 'No Country' is filled with richly-drawn characters and an enthralling story that builds merciless momentum. Charlie E This film is genuinely one of my favorite films ever, every actor is great, specifically Javier Bardem. His character is scarier than any horror movie character, and is pretty damn scary. The chase scene between him and Josh Brolins character maybe one of the best chase scenes ever, and is just a great film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review Audience Member He is up the stairs meet him there Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Dave C I love woody Harrilson but there is no reason for him to be in this film. He just sits there and then dies. Sorry but it’s true. This is also the First Tommy Lee jones movie to make me say no thank you. I couldn’t understand what he was saying. It was like he was in a different movie altogether. Anton (the villain) has no arc whatsoever and just walks off. You know I really tried but I need something, ANYTHING, to justify this, and it just doesn’t happen. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/27/24 Full Review O H The first 90 minutes are great with a few issues. Characters being more stupid than expected and another few small issues. Then they kill off the main character off screen by random people, they swap over to the 30 minute police side plot, the bad guy gets randomly hit by a car for no reason, and the movie ends suddenly. "This movie breaks all the rules!" Yeah, maybe there is a reason there are rules in the first place. "It is realistic." If I wanted realism I'd watch a documentary, not a fiction piece. If it was realistic, one of the hundred guys he fought would have managed to kill the antagonist or he would have been able to easily kill the main character. "It is supposed to be unsatisfying." If a movie is suposed to make you dislike it, I am going to dislike it. I am not going to like it because I am supposed to dislike it. "He is not really the main character." He is shown over 4 times more than the cop, we are supposed to follow his story the most, we are supposed to relate to and support him the most. He is the main character. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review Charles B this movie makes "the man who shot liberty valance" look good. as the movie wends its way to its inevitable conclusion i found myself jumping to the next scene to see how long it would be till we got there. somewhere around 7/17 I started getting an itchy trigger finger as I wanted one or both villains to gets theirs. alas it never really got to an ending; just sort of petered out like the Colorado Riven in Northern Mexico. Hey I only paid 5 bucks for the DVD on amazon and I figure it was worth $2.50. I liked the cinematography. For my 2.50, I'd take Raising Arizona or Fargo easily over this. Even "the man who wasn't there". Maybe I just can't take too much realism anymore Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/24 Full Review Space C I saw Tommy Lee Jones and Woody Harrelson and wanted to watch it but my word is this one of the worst movies I've ever had the displeasure of seeing. Scenes are drawn out way too long and it's like every character is in their own movie. Rubbish. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
