While Wonderland is my favourite Nyman score - and his own apparently - I do love this one, which nicks Henry Purcell's stately, stoic lower voices for something more hypnotic and relentless.
The result, as Neil Hannon put it, 'rocks' - punk in breeches. There's aggression in the sheer bloody-minded measuredness of it all, with every slash of bow on string, every clangorous blow upon the harpsichord, every bar-line tightening home another harmonic screw. Perfect, then, for Greenaway's anachronisms, his mathematics, through which move his beauty-marked grotesques.

This is a strikingly unusual soundtrack, and I have thought so from the first time I heard it (while watching the film). It is a mix of minimalist composition with some older classical instruments and styles. It works very well both as the background to an interesting film and as a stand-alone album.

The Draughtsman's Contract has beautiful orchestration, it reminds me of Daft Punk's "Verdis Quo" a little bit, actually. While overall this soundtrack is quite good, some of the pieces feel too repetitive, as if I'm listening to loops. Which feels odd for me to say, since I don't mind, for instance, Philip Glass' repetitiveness.

Based on Mozartian themes Nyman's music was the perfect foil for Peter Greenaway's stylised (some may say pretentious) period drama.

The bass of Henry Purcell meets Minimalism through a skilled modern composer.
Delightful as it is irritatingly monotonous at times!
