Mohammed Shami had a day to remember after India beat New Zealand by 70 runs on Wednesday, November 16 in the semi-final of the World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Shami finished with 9.5-0-57-7 as India bowled the Black Caps out for 327 while defending 397. The pacer started with the early wickets of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra.

Thereafter, he came back to dismiss Kane Williamson and Tom Latham in the same over. It was after Williamson and Daryl Mitchell put on 181 runs for the third wicket. Once Shami dismissed Mitchell, it was all over bar the shouting for the Kiwis.

Later, Shami cleaned up the tail by picking up the wickets of Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson. After being drafted into the XI following Hardik Pandya’s ankle injury, Shami has picked up 23 wickets from six matches.

1 – Mohammed Shami became the first Indian bowler to pick up 50 wickets in the ODI World Cup. Overall, he became the seventh bowler to the 50-wicket mark after Australia’s Glenn McGrath, Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, Australia’s Mitchell Starc, Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, Pakistan’s Wasim Akram and New Zealand’s Trent Boult.

1 – Mohammed Shami became the fastest bowler to get 50 wickets in the ODI World Cup. The pacer accomplished the feat in only his 17th innings in the mega event. Mitchell Starc earlier set the record in his 19th innings in the match against India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

1 – Mohammed Shami set the record for the best bowling figures in the knockout matches of the World Cups. He broke a 48-year-old record set by Australia’s Gary Gilmour way back in 1975. Gilmour had figures of 12-6-14-6 in the semi-final of the World Cup at Headingley in Leeds.

1 – Mohammed Shami set the record for the best bowling figures by an Indian in ODIs. He went past Stuart Binny, who had figures of 4.4-2-4-6 against Bangladesh back in June 2014 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
