Born in Kentucky in 1809, Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th president of the United States.

He is remembered and revered for his emancipation of the slaves after the Civil War, and his leadership during the conflict.

Lincoln came from humble beginnings and was self-educated, but as a young man was elected to the Illinois State Legislature.Eventually, he became a congressman. Lincoln ran for president in 1860 as a member of the Republican party.

He won the election and became president in an age of turmoil. The Civil War began soon after Lincoln entered office, and he held the country together during the difficult period in American history.

Lincoln opposed slavery, and during his presidency, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation to free all slaves.

In 1865, Lincoln was attending a play at the Ford Theatre in Washington DC when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.

He died the next day from his gunshot wounds. Along with George Washington, Lincoln’s place in American history is honored on President’s Day, which takes place each year on the 3rd Monday of February.

  1. Regarding #2. Although Lincoln himself never officially joined, he and his family attended the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield, IL where his wife was a member. His family had a reserved pew there which is still on display. (I’m from Springfield and this is just one of the many Lincoln sites you can visit! ☺️)

    What was the secret message engraved in Lincoln’s watch? Seems that for that to be said in 2009, it must also be known? BTW in 2009 the U.S. mint commemorated Lincoln’s 200 year anniversary he was born in 1809…There are 4 different designs on that penny….

  3. I read everything I can on this great man. I loved the quote “ Love is the chain to lock a child to its parent”. Another favorite of mine probably the one I love most is “All that I am or ever hope to be I owe to my Angel Mother”. An absolute brilliant man.

    This is my favorite so far. A great man is indeed determined by his perspective in life, how he reacts to his surroundings is based on how he interpret things.
