Forster's classic novel, the miniseries adaptation of "Howards End" is a portrayal of England at the turn of the 20th century told through the lens of three families: the intellectual Schlegels, the wealthy and prejudiced Wilcoxes and the working-class Basts. In the evolving landscape of social and class divisions, idealistic Schlegel sisters Margaret and Helen seek to help the impoverished Bast family while simultaneously ridding the Wilcoxes of their preconceived notions of class and welfare. What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Hayley Atwell shines in Howards End, a beautiful, if borderline superficial, adaptation of a much-revered book.

Kelly Lawler USA Today The British period piece has everything: Family drama, exquisite costuming and social change no one is ready for. Nov 10, 2021 Full Review Lucy Mangan Guardian This new version also hints at immigration as a new source of possible inheritors of the earth. Howards End, in whatever form you read or watch it, is an examination of how the rich get the gravy and the poor get the blame. May 20, 2019 Full Review John Doyle Globe and Mail There's too much of the soft murmur, too much of a library feel, about most of them. This Howards End doesn't have that. It's wistful, knowing and poignant. Oct 26, 2018 Full Review Neal Pollack Book & Film Globe [Alex] Lawther is effete, brilliant, eccentric, and focus-stealing in a show that often feels like earnest community theater. Jan 30, 2020 Full Review Ruth Maramis FlixChatter Film Blog The all-British cast is really strong, especially the mesmerizing Hayley Atwell. I also appreciate the fact that they downplay the romance here, instead it's more of a character study and astute commentary of social themes of the time. Dan S It was okay! I do not know why they had to change the character of Mr Bast's wife! Most people feel that way. Howards End in 1992 changed so much for me to love period films. I saw the 1992 version so many times I then read the book. It was fun and so well done. This updated version I was so disappointed. Not the same. Emma Thompson Helena Bonham Carter Anthony Hopkins Vanessa Redgrave Sam West Jemma Redgrave Nicola Duffet too (they updated her character in this was so unbelievable! Nicola was more realistic and fits into the story correctly!) They were the best cast. See the 1992 version not this ridiculous one! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/23 Full Review Rosie P Absolutely beautiful. I watch this (no lie) once every week. It's comforting. Atwell is stunning in this piece, especially towards the end when she stands up to Henry. It makes me teary eyed every time. The only reason I kept my STARZ subscription was to keep watching this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/05/23 Full Review Stace D I liked the conversations and closeness of the Schlegels. I hated that they had to be politically correct yet again by putting Africans in where EM Forrester never did. Jackie, the black girlfriend of Bast, is ridiculous! that would never have been in england at that time, and Forrester never wrote it. I give it only 2 stars because the director progressivized it and changed the original novel with something that is not historically accurate. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent cast, script, pacing Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review susan j Unfocused. Tiresome. Feels like a bunch of teenagers putting on a play in someone's basement, trying to pretend to be "grown-ups living long ago" but lacking all understanding of the times, social class in Britain, the actual characters, etc. As usual--in the 2020s--the sets, scenery, cinematography, and costumes are fantastic and expensive but all substance is missing. When I heard it was coming I could not have imagined not watching Howard's End, but it's a tedious waste of time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed the series more than the Hopkins/Thompson movie. The characters were well developed and I ended the series with a strong opinion about each of them. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
