Mr Inbetween:Ray Shoesmith is a deadpan hit-man who navigates his chilling business while also maintaining friendships, parental responsibilities and a fledgling romance
Any shows like Mr Inbetween?
I just finished the show for the first time and wonder if any shows are like it.

Q&A
I got a serious Justified vibe out of Mr. Inbetween - I suggest you check it out if you haven't - it is top notch.
Also features Damon Harriman.
It weirded me out when Damon Herriman popped up in Mr Inbetween. After 5 seasons of Justified I had no idea the most redneck character in the show was an Aussie.
Same here, I watched justified right before Mr. Inbetween by sheer coincidence. I was like is this guy in everything?
He played Manson in two different projects as well lol. Mindhunter and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood iirc.
It took me till right now to think "Who's in both shows?" Immediately followed by holy shit that is the same guy.
Agreed ✌️
What's it on?
Disney+ in the UK has all 6 seasons, ima check it out
Hope it's on the Aussie one, I'll have a suss, cheers!
It is on Aussie Disney+
Quarry
A Vietnam vet becomes a Hitman. Stars Damon Herriman from Mr Inbetween .
The Fixer
A special forces soldier is released from prison on the condition he works as a assassin for secret government agency.
I've never seen anyone else mention Quarry on Reddit. Some really interesting characters and story, wish we were getting more seasons.
Loved quarry
Quarry is great. It's a shame it wasn't on a bigger network. At least it wrapped up well.
I’ve read a few of the Quarry books, by Max Allan Collins. I didn’t realise they’d done an adaptation!
I adored Quarry. Damon Herriman was brilliant in that as well. That cast was fucking stacked with amazing character actors.
Both of these sound terribly derivative. Mr Inbetween did a wonderful job of making an utterly revolting human being sympathetic.
It gets better. They both have the actor, Peter Mullan as mysterious man that hires them.
Patriot is really good. It's just 2 seasons but it ends well
I'm on ep3 s2. Great show and great performances
It's a really slow starting show. Me and my girlfriend started it about half a year ago and are still on like the 4th or 5th episode. It's kind of boring so far.
Might not be your kind of show then, I didn't find it slow, I thought it was hilarious from the get go. It doesn't really "pick up" so do with that what you will.
I thought it was going to be more like Barry but I will admit that the main character intrigued me a bit, it just seems like everybody else gets the spotlight thus far. Not a lot of action besides what he does to the Asian dude lol... Which is quite a shame.
I kind of felt Mr inbetween was like a violent curb your enthusiasm
' Ray walks down the dark tunnel where the pedo sits waiting, to finish him off'
cue 'curb your enthusiasm' music.
Oh man..I spit out my coffee imagining this! 😆
Made me laugh
"I don't answer questions."
"What do you mean you don't answer questions, you bald fuck? Get the fuck out of my house and take my piss boy husband with you."
This is pretty perfect.. So many of Ray and Freddy's interactions could have ended with "FUCK YOU AND I'LL SEE YOU TOMORROW"
Barry but it's a lot more bizarre/comedic
Different vibe but some similarities and also an amazing show.
Yes! Great show, different in its own way
Yep, I watch Mr Inbetween and Barry back to back.
Barry is like nothing else. Such an original tone, but I get why meatheads looking for a "hitman" show don't like it. Not me. Love it.
My Dad loved Barry and Mr Inbetween
Me and my girl watched these within around the same time and loved both of them. I think Mr in between is the one we went with more though. Barry is definitely a great show though, and both have this dark humor to them.
Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad. For people who have seen them, I recommend Mr InBetween as the Australian Mike Ehrmantraut.
I always thought Mr Inbetween felt like a translation of putting John Wick into the Breaking Bad universe. Ray only ever gets outmatched by the system he is operating within, which is when he shines while he adapts like a wily cunt and comes out on top.
The Old Man
This was good. Any word on a second season?
There will be one I'm not sure when
Second season is due soon. Filming paused when Jeff Bridges was diagnosed with lymphoma, but it’s completed now and the show should air sometime late 2024.
Les Norton & Rake both good
So sad that Les Norton only got one season. Loved all the books and enjoyed the series.
Yeah same for me mate
Rake isn’t like mr in between but it still excellent in its own way :).
Not the same show but there could totally have been crossover episodes.
Rake's driver in the final season was the same actor who recognised Ray as "The Magician" in the episode where he went to vouch for Freddy when he had all the gambling debt.
Fargo!!!!
‘boy swallows universe’ - another gritty working class australian drama/crime show
That was surprisingly good. Enjoying High Country at the moment.
Thumbs up for High Country. It didn't look like much but I'm pleasantly surprised.
I’ve got a mate who was an extra in that.
Now THAT is a story!
In an interview Scott Ryan said he was consciously trying to combine The Sopranos with Curb Your Enthusiasm, for what it’s worth.
I recommend Dead Loch a lot alongside Mr Inbetween but they are very different shows. Both are great shows to watch though.
If you like the realness and authenticity of Mr. Inbetween, I highly recommend Reservation Dogs.
realness? there are ghosts giving out advice in it
Justified
One thing I love about this show is that it captures the pure essence of suburban Melbourne life so well. Spending time with family, buying his daughter an ice-cream, being shy when meeting a girl while walking her dog, speaking with his brother about their traumatic childhood home and having dim sims for lunch. It is so normal and familiar, I easily relate to it and become immersed.
it's set in sydney btw. (the magician was melbourne)
but yeah, same things.
Oh really. Dum-dum me. I am sorry and thank you so much for letting me know. Anyway, the suburban locations, and family scenes are rather lovely and normal and heart-warming and heart-wrenching - so ordinary un-glamourised life, if you know what I mean. I laugh and cry a lot when I watch it.
For me personally Breaking Bad and Ray Donovan. Many in this sub enjoyed The Sopranos but it wasn't for me. 🦄
I found Barry and Killing Eve very like it in a broad sense, but the specifics of each show are very different. All funny though
Barry and Ray Donovan
Patriot (the show, not the movie), Barry, Ray Donovan
Quarry
The inbetweeners but similar in name only
Car Friend
As in the British sitcom? I mean, it’s one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen but is nothing like Mr Inbetween
Literally said "in name only".
Literally said "in name only".
Maybe Barry? To some degree its the same
Does anybody know if Tulsa King is any way similar? I've just seen a couple clips on tik tok and it seems to be about this guy just going about doing badass shit
I actually really liked it but it’s very glossy Hollywood compared to MIB.
It's crime related and has some funny moments. And him having a civilian love interest...that's about it
Not TV shows but a couple of great movies that also explore the Aussie criminal underworld in similar ways to Mr Inbetween:
* Two Hands - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0145547/ (Heath Ledger & Rose Byrne both got their first big breaks from this film)
* Gettin’ Square - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0341376/
Great movie recs. I saw Two Hands so many times at the movies as a teenage girl, still so quotable. And I love all the Aussie Edgerton films. Felony was so underrated. And Acolytes, and Wish You Were Here, Animal Kingdom, The Square.
Getting Square is my favourite Aussie movie of all time, I just love David Wenham so much
It's not really like Mr Inbetween. But if you like that show, you'll love Brassic. Petty crims in England. But like Mr Inbetween it has a lot of heart.
I watched an Irish one called “Love/Hate” after seeing a recommendation on a similar post and it came the closest for me to scratching the MIB itch. Gritty. Tulsa King was like MIB Hollywood lite but I liked it too. Better Call Saul is just an awesome, awesome show (I didn’t get through Breaking Bad). Fargo is fucking fantastic (I couldn’t do s4) not similar at all but saw someone else suggest it and wanted to back it up. None of these are Australian though which I think is a lot of the appeal about MIB.
I really liked Guy Pierce in Jack Irish and pretty realistic set in Richmond Vic from memory.
Fitzroy
Thanks... couldn't remember but great pub scenes.
How do you watch The Magician in Australia?
Also, aside from the scene in the horse stable reference to the name, is it confirmed that it’s the same character?
How fucking good is Mr Inbetween, I loved it.
It's been a while since I watched Mr Inbetween (and loved it), something I watched more recently and enjoyed similarly is The Gentleman tv series on Netflix atm
The Gentleman was incredible. Loved the rapid dialogue and layered wittiness to it. Similar to MIB in that it’s also a serialization of a film
Great suggestions… going to add Poker Face with Natasha Lyonne.
It might sound weird, but I think whoever likes the type of character development of Mr Inbetween will like Atlanta. They share similar Curb your enthousiasm vibes. I find Justified way too much of an "easy consumable American show" to be compared to Mr Inbetween.
Not really that these 2 are similar to Mr Inbetween exactly, but I feel the series of Fargo might also be to the taste of Mr Inbetween fans. And Top Boy has a similar rawness to Mr Inbetween I think.
