Probably a derivative of aoibh ‘beauty’ ( compare Aoibheann ), but it has also been associated with Esuvia, a Gaulish goddess. It was borne by several different heroines in ancient Irish legend, and in historical times by a daughter of King Dermot of Leinster, who married Richard de Clare, Earl of Pembroke, leader of the Anglo-Norman incursion into Ireland of 1169 . It has sometimes been Anglicized as Eva.
