      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Spaceman's poignant themes are partly brought to life by sensitive performances from a talented cast, but it fails to consistently engage with its most interesting ideas.

      Audience Says

Spaceman definitely isn't for everybody, but it does a decent job of adapting a slow, cerebral story that's easier to engage with in print.

Robert Levin Newsday No matter how much Sandler makes the audience feel for Jakub, it can be hard to sustain an entire picture with nothing more than overarching sadness. And “Spaceman” never finds another register. Rated: 2/4 Apr 8, 2024 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's a little too slow and a little too philosophical. Mar 23, 2024 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) Spaceman is ultimately Sandler’s show but it’s one astronaut movie that ultimately seems very short on rocket fuel. Rated: 2/5 Mar 7, 2024 Full Review James Mottram South China Morning Post For a while, the sight of Sandler talking to a sizeable spider has its moments. But director Johan Renck (Chernobyl) does not sustain interest into the final act, with a story that gets increasingly maudlin and sentimental. Rated: 2.5/5 May 9, 2024 Full Review Filipe Freitas Always Good Movies It’s a half-interesting, half-baked illustration weighed down by a listless melancholy that sedates more than inspires. Rated: 2/5 Apr 18, 2024 Full Review Louisa Moore Screen Zealots It takes a lot of guts to attempt a screen adaptation of such an abstract science fiction / fantasy story, but director Johan Renck pulls it off, mostly with the help of a strong lead performance from Adam Sandler. Jose S Love Adam Sandler, but just could not like this movie much. Simple, narrowed subject it addresses, and is slow to do it, which I dont mind, but couldve done alot more with it. Id have to put this one in the "One I wouldnt watch again or recommend to anyone" pile... Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/10/24 Full Review David F I really, really appreciate that it took a shot at expressing deeper, difficult ideas that we humans don’t always like to think about. At times it got kinda cheesy and new agey, but I loved it for taking that chance. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review Rob G Good movie if you are the analytical type that like to ponder on the meaning of it all and what the movie was really about. Was the alien real? Was he reconciled with his wife in the end? Does he get to start over? Good questions....you decide. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review ARC B Franz Kafka. Its so very absurd. I reeally enjoyed it. It took such a different turn from what I had imagined. It isn't long but its very slow, easy to follow with all the metaphors. There is room for the audience to ponder about their own perspectives, their feelings and memories this movie resurrects. At least I felt this way during the film. The second, sentimental part made me feel a little unsettled... The story seemed finished, yet it utilized the time left to redeem Jakub in our eyes, make him likeable and even deliver the happy ending. And of course, the final cruising through the nebula is very sentimental and calming. What Jakub discovers in the cloud is quite contrasting for example with the take of interstellar and the act in the fourth dimension. And the visuals, the acting, the music... I enjoyed it all. Maybe people disagree, im just glad for having discovered a new masterpiece and I am certain that once I find the time to see it again, I will enjoy it twice as much in a different way Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review Kodie G Turned off after only 20 minutes. So very strange Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review lennard g Wow. What a wasted potential! A perfect opportunity to make a compelling, mysterious, sci-fi eldritch horror themed masterpiece. My first initial thoughts when I saw the trailer where very positive. Adam Sandler on a spooky lonely mission, accompanied by a mysterious spider withholding secrets. Hell yeah, space Bloodborne. But no. Sadly, not. It's a love story, all there is. Would have been a mix of The Thing meets Alien meets The Lighthouse. Who is the spider? Is he real? Are his intentions nefarious? Is he just a manifestation of the cloud trying to get the spaceman to go into it?! So many cool ideas that could have been explored. Will never watch again Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
