After the success of Gladiator, it wasn't unusual to see director Ridley Scott turn to Hans Zimmer again for the score to Black Hawk Down, his fierce adaptation of Mark Bowden's account of the tragic 1993 American military intervention in Somalia. What was more surprising was the schedule Scott imposed on the German-born composer: 15 days to write, arrange, and record the film's nearly two hours of music. The results of Zimmer's miraculous two-week musical campaign not only belie those constraints; they instantly take their place alongside The Thin Red Line as some of the most compelling music he's produced. The gambit here is simple--portray the combatants as two warring tribes, with their native musics locked in a tense dance for domination. Yet the results are geometrically more complex and artistically rewarding, with thrash guitar and speed metal/hip-hop/martial rhythms encroaching on, then fusing with, the timeless indigenous music of North Africa to become something wholly other. Senegalese vocalist Baaba Maal contributes greatly, as do Algerian worldbeat artist Rachid Tara and the duet of Denez Prigent and Zimmer's Gladiator collaborator Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance). Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros' warm rendition of Thomas More's "Minstrel Boy" also underscores the military's brotherhood. But the real star here is Zimmer, who again takes his quest for "music he's never heard" to yet another rewarding plateau. --Jerry McCulley

- Bought this for the gym and also when I'm on travel, plus, I just updated my Music Play-lists, as well as just got my new iPod (4 X'mas) early this year.
I'm a huge fan of both Ridley Scott and Hans Zimmer ... both are geniuses at their own Craft, with one interpreting the finer aspects of Life & Fantasy on Celluloid: Drama, Action, Fiction, History, & more; with the Other, creating the film's overall 'Movement' if you will, resulting in an emotion-packed, roller-coaster of a ride, that leaves you hungry for more ...
There's about 6 or 7 Tracks on this CD that I added to my New Play-list, and I'll seal the CD and save it & store it as a "Master", in case I need it in the future.

My Ridley's favorites are: The Alien Series, Blade Runner (probably most favorite), Hannibel, GI Jane, Gladiator, to Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, to the current Robin Hood.
Each film displaying the unique directorial range of a filmmaker who has, in the past, become categorized as a genre director, however, thorough my years as a popcorn critic, I have seen something larger than himself, as contained within the fabric of his very Cool Americana cinematic stories, and that is that, Ridley, as Merlin, at times, taps into something Primal in Men (ok a few women too) - and that is ... our need to fight against those who would oppress us.

Ridley also seems to always surround his film-making bubble, with other outstanding genius-artisans, like Hans Zimmer, an impresario of pure sound magic, that has a way of combining musical Elements, Textures & combination's, to produce Something That We have Never Heard Before ... and that's what I like best ... to experience something new and uniquely different & Interesting, ... that interrupts my daily routines ... and gives me a boost, depending on the mood.

- My other Soundtrack favorites (not all-inclusive): Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings soundtracks and Star Wars - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Special Edition): John Williams, London Symphony Orchestra & the GodFather Series.

The music is refreshingly different yet haunting for western world ears. I have used the music to acclamate my mind for a setting like North Africa and on occasion used when driving in Kuwait and Iraq. GJC

I purchased this album to grow my Zimmer collection. I didn't think Black Hawk Down was that phenomenal of a movie, but I loved the soundtrack. I think I've played this sound track over a dozen times, and it never gets old. Mix this soundtrack up with 'Tears of The Sun' soundtrack. You'll have an interesting day. If you're a fan of Hans Zimmer or Black Hawk Down. Pick this soundtrack up. It is worth the time, and money to listen to.

I have seen Black Hawk Down at least three times and loved it.The thing is I didn't realise the music was so bloody good till my son played it on a visit to my home, I don't even remember hearing it which just goes to show the film makers got it so right for the film.!!!. I got a copy of him and as soon as I heard the whole cd I bought one of my own. Fabulous, eerie, heartwrenching, and I expect to have to buy another because I don't know how long a cd lasts but I can see this one being worn out. Thank you Hans Zimmer

I liked the movie and certainly like the music. Hans Zimmer does excellent work on all his scores and this is a great example of the racing themes of Black Hawk Down. Without the music, the movie would have lost a good deal, but this score adds a whole lot to every scene.

I also liked the story board depictions on the inside of the cover sleeve. Cool touch.
