LIBRARY

The library of the Collegio Ghislieri holds more than 130,000 volumes: it is considered one of the most impressive private book collections in Europe.

Its history goes back to the origins of the College, when the first volumes arrived, perhaps purchased by the direct will of the founding pope or perhaps by transfer from the abbey canteen of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro. To this original nucleus date back the most ancient works among those preserved today in Ghislieri and some of its most precious incunabula, such as the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. Over the centuries, the library has been enriched with many rare works, precious testimonies of the independence and freedom of thought that has always characterized Ghislieri and the many historical events in which the College has been protagonist.

Today, alongside the textbooks freely requested by the students, there are over 10 kilometres of bookshelves containing fiction and essays, encyclopaedias, repertories and bibliographical tools for every area of knowledge.

Every year, the library is enriched with thousands of new books, purchased or acquired through donations, often collected in funds that preserve, organize and make accessible the legacies of great intellectuals and scholars who are protagonists of the life of our country.
