Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024) Movie Review – An unexpected feel-good romance comedy

An unexpected feel-good romance comedy with some food for thought

In the present day, many would love a drama-free romantic relationship, one where there are no hassles, fights or arguments because your partner is extremely subservient to you and caters to your every need while not having a conscience of their own. The 2024 Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon starrer – Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya narrates the story of one such “hassle-free” relationship.

The film narrates the story of a human who ends up falling in love with a high-functioning robot and ends up realising that it is best to keep the human world and the AI world separate. Aaryan Agnihotri, a Robotics Engineer, falls in love with Sifra only to realise that she is not a human woman but a robot.

Aaryan wonders how he was able to have sex with the robot considering she was not a human and decides to marry her. He lies to her aunt to have Sifra sent to India from the States and thus starts the chaos of a robot girl in the human world. The film is a complicated take on the present atmosphere where we hear of Artificial Intelligence taking over the world.

While every character in the movie is not able to see how Sifra is not a human being, it would be impossible not to see the difference between a human and a robot in real life. Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is a fantasy science fiction film that many dream of living. In a world where finding true love seems impossible, finding a partner who knows everything about you and lives with you despite that just because she is programmed to do so is a dream for many.

The film sees Aaryan live that dream and see the repercussions of the same. Aaryan is an infuriating character to watch in some parts of the film because of his man-child-like behaviour. He does not like being said no to and it gets annoying. However, it is Shahid Kapoor’s performance that makes Aaryan bearable and his straight-face humour that makes you overlook the flaws in Aaryan’s character.

Kriti Sanon as Sifra, the monotone, conscience-free robot is a treat to watch. Her antics with Aaryan’s family and humour caused just because she is a robot who fails to understand slang and sarcasm make the film a family comedy. While there is romance in the film, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya does not tell the tale of a love story that will be remembered for generations.

The film portrays an impossible love story but presents it in a way that makes it seem appealing. The other characters of the film are interesting and serve only as supporting characters to the main leads. Dimple Kapadia as Aunt Urmila is fun to watch but her performance in this one does not stand out as one would like it.

The film’s OST is top notch and seeing Shahid Kapoor dance after so many years is a treat to the eye. Songs like “Akhiyaan Gulaab” and “Laal Peeli Akhiyaan” are foot-tapping numbers but the romance track “Tum Se” is an underrated single. The title track, “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya” is a remake of the original classic that many Indians grew up listening to.

While the film tries to pay an ode to the classic hit, the nostalgia felt while listening to the original single by Raghav is still unmatched. Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya leaves viewers finding the idea of dating a “drama-free” robot appealing, however, it is the final minutes of the film that break this misconception. This is a light-hearted comedy which leaves you with some food for thought about the perils of relying on technology.
