As the mid-2000s cult classic becomes more and more prophetic with each passing year, interest in watching the Mike Judge comedy Idiocracy on streaming gets higher. Released in 2006, the film follows an average Joe (Luke Wilson) who takes part in a military experiment that is supposed to put him in stasis for a year. Unfortunately, Joe is awakened 500 years later to discover that the average human intelligence has greatly declined. Bitingly satirical of the state of the United States in 2006, Idiocracy is as outlandishly funny as it is cleverly dystopian.

The film was greeted with lukewarm praise upon release with some critics unable to understand Judge's intentionally lowbrow humor was a parody of what he was satirizing and not an endorsement (via Rotten Tomatoes). Nevertheless, the movie's detractors weren't able to keep it from instantly becoming a cult hit, and subsequent rewatches yield details in Idiocracy that weren't noticed the first time. Packed with dozens upon dozens of sight gags and background jokes Idiocracy is the perfect streaming movie because it offers a familiar comedy experience while still challenging the audience to use their brains and think critically about the world around them.

Shockingly, Idiocracy isn't streaming on any major services and isn't available to be viewed for free through major subscriptions like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, or the myriad of other online competitors. The film has streamed on services before, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility that it could return in the near future. Though it was a box office flop upon release (via Box Office Mojo), Idiocracy succeeded on home video through rentals which would make it a surefire hit as a sleeper success on a streamer. Cult hits are resurrected on streaming all the time, and Idiocracy is a prime candidate to get the streaming bump.

The movie was produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox, now known as 20th Century Studios, so it isn't necessarily toiling away in the catalog of some lesser-known company with no affiliations with major streaming services. However, 20th Century Fox was purchased by Disney which means the most logical place for Idiocracy would be Disney+ which does carry a limited number of recognizable Fox properties. Since the movie is somewhat raunchy, it won't likely end up on Disney+, but could possibly land on Hulu which also frequently deals with Fox programming.
