About MIT Press Journals

The MIT Press is a mission-driven, not-for-profit scholarly publisher devoted to the widest dissemination of its content. The Press published its first two quarterlies, Journal of Interdisciplinary History and Linguistic Inquiry in 1970 and founded its journals branch shortly thereafter in 1972. Today, the division publishes more than forty titles, frequently adding select publications of long-standing repute or innovative, fresh material to its current list.

The MIT Press, among the first university presses to offer its serial titles online, delivers content in print and electronic formats, covering a wide range of disciplines including the arts and humanities, social sciences, and specialized areas of science and technology. With a commitment to growth and evolution of scholarly publishing, the journals division continues to expand its publishing program, recently launching Rapid Reviews/Infectious Diseases, the Harvard Data Science Review, and three new open access journals in the brain sciences, including Neurobiology of Language, Network Neuroscience, and Open MIND: Discoveries in Cognitive Science. Several of the Press’ journals are published in partnership with other organizations, including Dædalus, on behalf of the American Academy for Arts and Sciences, and African Arts, on behalf of the James S. Coleman African Studies Center at UCLA. Additionally, the journals branch publishes in cooperation with Harvard University, the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics, the Association for Computational Linguistics, and the International Society for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology.

The MIT Press is an eminently global publisher—countries in its top ten readership pool span the world, including the UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, Japan, and China, among others. Our journals’ web pages are viewed over 5 million times a year, and boast about 2 million visitors from diverse regions. MIT Press journals are featured in book stores across the globe, and in major cities around the US. Publications such as Global Environmental Politics and Innovations explore provocative issues of global relevance, including world politics, entrepreneurship, environmental change, and international finance, and feature reportage on subjects and regions not widely covered in the general media. MIT Press prides itself on hosting publications with a cross-cultural perspective that speak to an international audience.

For over thirty years, the journals division has acquired titles considered required reading in their fields. A considerable number of the Press’ journals boast a high impact factor, such as International Security, which is often the number one journal in international relations. Computational Linguistics and The Review of Economic and Statistics are near the top of their respective fields. Whether discussing breakthroughs in machine/human interface in Artificial Life or studying the intricacies of neural processing in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, MIT Press journals frequently publish work on the cutting edge of scholarship.
