SPIDER-MAN 4: Jacob Batalon Addresses Hobgoblin Rumors And Reflects On NO WAY HOME's Big Cameos

Jacob Batalon talks more about possibly returning for Spider-Man 4 and reveals whether there's any truth to the Hobgoblin rumours. The actor also reflects on working with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield!

If you're an Amazing Spider-Man reader, then you'll know that Ned Leeds and Hobgoblin have a complicated history. While Roderick Kingsley is the true villain behind the villain's mask, Ned was once brainwashed into suiting up and has caused a lot of problems for Spidey over the years.

Now the MCU's Ned no longer remembers Peter Parker, it's possible Marvel Studios could find a way to make it so that their version of the character also suits up as Hobgoblin.

Concept art has confirmed the idea was very briefly considered for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but how does Jacob Batalon feel about it?

"Honestly, I'm not sure," he admitted in an interview with CBR. "Again, we may have talked about things, for sure, but I don't know if it would've really led to anything serious about being a villain, or anything like that."

The odds of this happening seem slim, and if Hobgoblin does appear, then Kingsley arguably makes more sense to be responsible for tormenting the web-slinger. Ned showed a penchant for magic in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but that was a last-minute change to the movie after America Chavez was cut from the story due to changing release dates.

As for his MCU future, Batalon said, "I'm open to anything, and I think we all are open to anything. Unless you're like a superhero, like big time, one of the main ones they're trying to make movies about, you don't really know what's going to happen. In the industry, people don't want to hope to wish."

"So, I would hopefully [return]. I'm down for anything. I would love to be a part of something special again. But also at the same time, I understand it's a business, and people may not want that thing anymore, so I'm just being more realistic than anything else."

In a separate conversation with ComicBook.com, the actor reflected on the experience of sharing the screen with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield during his previous MCU appearance.

"I think everyone on set knew it was really special," Batalon says. "It had never been done before. I feel like everyone understood the gravity of the moment, but we also kept it really light," Batalon said. "At that point in filming, because we were working during the pandemic, we were just all grateful to be there."

"Working on that scene specifically was such a delight because Andrew and Tobey are super great," he said of Ned's exchange with the three Peters in Midtown High. "I remember thinking that it was probably one of those moments where people will probably be talking about it for a long time."

@ProudPatriot76 - I want that too, but they won’t drop Zendaya that easily. I’m 39 and don’t see the draw, but they’re going for a younger audience, so I don’t assume they’re going to shoot for what i want.

@Matchesz - Tobey didn't need the Arrow gang to help solve all the side side quests. I hope they have the balls to commit to NWH's ending but I know they wont. It'll be back to the Status quo by the end of the 4th films 2nd act.

I liked Ned personally so I would be down to see him again..

However if we are doing another trilogy with Holland then I would rather he (and MJ) show up later down the line while we get to see Peter interact with other MCU versions of his supporting cast from the comics such as Harry , Felicia etc.

Have Peter enter groove in his new life by the second or third film which is when you bring back his past to disrupt his present via Ned or MJ (maybe even both?).

I kinda wanna see him show up as a villain in the future. Think it'd be an interesting arc that because Peter made Ned forget, Ned went down a darker path.

Add to that when Ned finds out, he could go full villain and join a MCU-native Doc Ock's Sinister Six with Vulture (who forgot Peter too), Scorpion, Shocker, Mysterio and Chameleon.

I’m cool with him not being a villain either since I feel like doing the Ned being brainwashed and framed as the real Hobgoblin like in the comics woukd be unnecessary and you could just go into the actual ones like Roderick Kingsley or Jason Macendale sooner.

@TheVisionary25 - yeah, those two are more obvious picks if they wanna do Hobgoblin (or Jack O'Lantern).

Just combined with that scene telling Ned he won't go villain would make it even more poignant. How can he keep a promise if he doesn't remember who he made it to?

Doing the Hobgoblin thing would feel a little repetitive, even though it would make a lot of sense for this Ned after NWH (he's already a magic user and he's now been effectively abandoned by his best friend).

If they're gonna do something new, then do something new. No Goblins, no black suit/Venom. Do a more urban based movie. NYC, Kingpin, Daredevil, some enforcer/s. Scorpion or someone. Other gangsters from the comics (Tombstone, Foswell, etc). Maybe Black Cat. Gwen Stacy was done perfectly in the TASM movies, but Black Cat has barely had more than a cameo.

After establishing him his comic relief, it would be hard for this version of Ned to evolve into the hobgoblin.

I love a lot of the Spider-Man films, Spider-Man 2. Probably being my favorite... But they have yet to nail all the supporting cast. In the original series, Kirsten Dunst was TERRIBLE. In the current series, Tom Holland is probably the best casting ever for the character... But it never felt like the characters from the comics. I realize all this is difficult, and they don't want to just rehash what we've seen on the page, but I hope we get a Spiderman that captures the heart of the character soon
