Lots of reviews point out the errors in equations. Almost too glaring of an oversight that the first equation of the first paper (by Einstein no less) had glaring errors that would be obvious even to a lay person, left me wondering if that error in particular could even be an intentional signal by the authors not to take for granted the entirety of the content. I could be reading too much into it though.

Mostly I like seeing what papers Professor Hawking included in his collection and which papers he didn't. The best way to wrap your head around physical interpretations of mathematical discoveries is to read originals. Putting complex math into common language is a huge challenge and Schrodinger, Bohr, Dirac, Weyl and Born were all gifted writers. I will re-read and enjoy this book until I can no longer hold it up. Thanks.

After I got into the the text, I was surprised to find that Stephen Hawking would lend his name to this publication . It appears to be a "boot-leg" computer-scanned-and-translated reproduction of a collection of historically significant quantum physics papers gleaned from the archives of the various respected international scientific societies.

There is no index, very few references and/or footnotes, and some blatantly obnoxious failures of computer translation of mathematical expressions and equations.

All that being said, if you can get a "VERY-GOOD" copy for a reasonable price, (less than$5 plus shipping) the book offers the best opportunity I have seen for the interested reader with a good graduate-level, BASIC physics and math foundation to review the theoretical milestones bridging the gulf from Newtonian to Nuclear to Cosmic Particle Physics.

Especially without all the sci-fi mythology and P.T. Barnum showmanship currently being employed to attract a gullible public...

I've been looking for an organized collection of source material, the actual papers that form the theoretical underpinning of quantum physics upon which our understanding of the impossibly small is based. Stephen Hawking does a rather adroit job of providing just enough scientific and science-historical context that you're not reading these papers in a total vacuum--you have a bit of an idea what physicists knew and what problems they had to resolve in theory and experiment at each branch point in the journey (conveniently arranged in the book as different chapters). I can't recommend this book enough!

This is a great book IF you are a 3rd or 4th year physics or mathematics major. The forward is written by my personal hero, Mr. Stephen Hawking. Most of the rest of this book is a re-publishing of physics papers submitted to publication over the last century. These papers mark the major break-throughs in physics during the 20th century. It was a great idea to put these papers in one place. Trouble is, these papers were written by the brighest minds of the 20th century for other physics professors, NOT THE PUBLIC.

Mr. Hawking has gained the ear of the public over the last few years with his amazing books which enable the average person to understand what man has learned about his universe to date. We are trusting that anything he publishes on a public venue like Amazon, will be equally enjoyable and informative to the average person. If you compare those previous books as advertised on Amazon, to this book, you can't see any difference. You are led to believe it is another great book by Stephen Hawking, which some of us thirst for like children thirst for the next Harry Potter book.

I was greatly disappointed when I got into the book and realized I was reading the unedited original publications of the great physicists of the last 100 years. Not that there is anything wrong with them but I don't have a prayer of understanding the material as presented. I did well in algebra, calculus and differential equations - 40 years ago in college. Now I can just barely recognize that there are differential equations in this book - and lots of them. You had better be using higher math on a daily basis RIGHT NOW if you hope to understand anything in this book. I was trusting Mr. Hawking to translate this information into language I could understand - like he has done in his previous books.

If you have a mastery of higher mathematics and are interested in learning the history of physics on the deepest level - this book is for you. Otherwise, don't waist your money. I place the blame not on Stephen Hawking - assuming he has no control over the way his books are presented on Amazon, but the blame is on Amazon itself. They could put a short blurb like "contains advanced mathematics" or "not for the novice" or some such warning in the description but they did not. Now, I may be the only fool to buy the book without investigating further, but I doubt it. How many Hawking fans have bought this book only to find it is hopelessly over their heads? Shame on you, Amazon, for taking advantage of your customers.

I must admit I love reading new science books, always preferred them to fiction books...but then again I may be completely mad. I find this book more substantial than his other work as he delves into other peoples great work, talking about other theories of which most have won noble prizes for. It can be seen as a little bit less user friendly, but then again for those that seek the actual papers and read science journals regularly within the field it would be a better book than his other work.
