Product Description
Leslie Howard, Merle Oberon and Raymond Massey star in Harold Young's thrilling take on Baroness Orczy's classic adventure story a barnstorming success at the box-office and the first of two films (with 1941's homage Pimpernel Smith) featuring Leslie Howard as the legendary master of disguise. The Scarlet Pimpernel is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.
Every bit the foppish English gentleman, Sir Percy Blakeney's foolish demeanour is a mere cover to conceal his true identity as the 'Scarlet Pimpernel' daring saviour of French aristocrats during Robespierre's Reign of Terror. With the villainous Chauvelin desperate to track him down, a plan is soon put into action which threatens the life and liberty of Sir Percy's beautiful wife in the hope of putting paid to the Pimpernel's exploits once and for all...

This is the famous story of an English aristocrat, Sir Percy Blakeney, (Leslie Howard) who leads a double life. By day he is a "Dandy", and by night he is the "Scarlet Pimpernel" (the name is a family emblem that is a small red flower). To be clear, he rescues French nobles from Robespierre's Reign of Terror in the French revolution and leaves a scarlet pimpernel behind. By doing this, his enemies have come to call him the "Scarlet Pimpernel". No one knows his identity. Not even his wife, Marguerite, (Merle Oberon) who is secretly in love with the courage and cunning of the Scarlet Pimpernel. And who, in comparing him to her milquetoast husband, has lost all respect for her husband. The plot becomes more complicated when Marguerite must join with the evil Chauvelin, (Raymond Massey) to try to trap the Scarlet Pimpernel, in order to try and save her in-laws who have been taken and sentenced to the guillotine. This film is very entertaining. I was enthralled to find out if the Scarlet Pimpernel was shrewd and skillful enough to outwit Chauvelin when trapped.
Special mention for Ms. Oberon's costumes that were designed for her and are so opulent that she looks like she stepped out of a Gainsborough painting including those glorious hats that elegantly show off Ms. Oberon's superior beauty. We are reminded why people described Ms. Oberon as the most beautiful woman they ever saw.
There was ample sexual energy between Marguerite and Percy to make this film very romantic. Which makes sense when you know that Leslie Howard seriously fell in love with Merle Oberon while making this movie and left his wife. Ms. Oberon will end the affair and eventually marry Alexander Korda.
The DVD's picture and sound was very good. Front and back covers are in English.
As far as I can tell, nothing is missing. (Some of the other reviews here, which complain about missing material, e.g., the portrait scene, are complaining about a DVD version. I wish Amazon would properly separate the products so that only the reviews pertinent to that product show.)
The picture is clear throughout, with few sparkles or other obvious defects. However, the contrasts in the picture are not very strong; the image has a faded look. Perhaps the original from which the VHS was made was itself a duplicate. The sound is reasonably good, but not terribly strong; you have to raise the level a bit to catch the softer speeches. Overall, however, there was no major viewing discomfort. It would be nice if Criterion or someone would get a good old copy of the film and do a really sharp DVD of it.
This is an adventure movie of a sort, but not a swashbuckler. It's not Robin Hood or Zorro. There isn't much actual physical action; it is more a story of intrigue and espionage and tactical maneuvering between the hero and the villain. So the pace will seem slow to many modern viewers. What carries the film is the plot, and the characters, and the dialogue. If you get yourself into the right frame of mind, the film does not drag, but holds your interest.
The lead actors are all great, and the supporting cast (including standard character actors such as Nigel Bruce and Melville Cooper) is adequate for the purpose. Merle Oberon is hauntingly beautiful and her acting is convincing (some don't like her as an actress, but she showed leading lady quality here, beyond a doubt); Leslie Howard is great as the hero, as is Raymond Massey as the villain. The sparring dialogue between Howard and Massey is enjoyable. Howard's character, of course, has to pretend to be effete and a fop, to cover up his secret heroic identity, and I think he does that better than Tyrone Power did in Zorro.
The good news is that you can get this tape, sometimes still new and factory-sealed, from Amazon sellers, more cheaply than any DVD edition, and, if some commenters here are right, at least some of the DVD versions are missing scenes, so if you still have a good VHS player, this might be the way to go, until a new, full, polished DVD version comes out.

were first rate and considering the time of production remarkable . Leslie Howard headed a strong cast ,
Hollywood would not have made a better job of the good story itself.
